| There is nothing more important to the society we serve than good health. Our medical school is the oldest in the South and one of the ten oldest in the country. We seek dedicated students from rural and urban areas, from our richly diverse racial and ethnic society, and from well over 100 different college and university backgrounds. There is no single best candidate to our school; rather we are committed to a student body that reflects the wonderfully diverse population of South Carolina. We know that if we wish to serve our entire state we must have representatives of our entire state in our College of Medicine. The transformation of college student to physician is exciting and challenging. There is nothing more remarkable in all education. We understand that it takes a great faculty, a strong student body and a nurturing environment. For students to learn, the faculty must take interest and support the students. Students learn that medicine is a "team sport" and that helping one another is almost as important as helping our patients. We welcome all those who would like to be part of a grand and old tradition of excellence in medical education. We know of nothing more important than the opportunity to help the next generation of physicians improve the health of the society we serve. | Dr. Jerry Reves Dean, College of Medicine
