Joni D. Nelson, PhD, MS, Post Doctoral Scholar in Oral Health Interprofessionalism in the College of Dental Medicine, Division of Population Oral Health has been recognized for a scientific poster award, alongside Drs. Martin, Leite, McElligot, Garr and Bhavsar at the 5th Annual Telehealth Summit of South Carolina. The award-winning poster described applications of telehealth for oral health care, including a pathway for ameliorating traditional geographic access to care barriers for rural and underserved communities. Our research involved a statewide feasibility assessment that includes the identification of consulting specialists, pilot demonstration applications, reimbursement and regulatory issues in South Carolina (SC). The study was purposed to understand the interest and need for the usage of telehealth technology by professional dental health providers in SC. Hosted by Palmetto Care Connections, the Annual Telehealth Summit of South Carolina aims to connect healthcare resources to healthcare needs by enabling access to quality care using innovative technology. At this event regional and national leaders shared clinical best practice and evidenced-based research around innovative telehealth strategies to support population health improvements in the Carolinas.
In 2010, a state level Telehealth Workgroup initiated the development of a statewide Telehealth Network called Palmetto Care Connections (PCC). The primary focus of PCC is to coordinate existing Telehealth/Telemedicine activities, expand successful models such as the South Carolina Department of Mental Health TelePsych and The Medical University of South Carolina’s REACH or TeleStroke program. It is to develop new Telehealth/Telemedicine applications, assist providers in navigating through the steps of implementing Telemedicine, advocate for reimbursement by all payers and serve as a resource or clearinghouse of Telehealth information for South Carolinians.
