Our goal: To continue to build the most advanced dental education center in the US In 1967, the Medical University of South Carolina opened the doors to its College of Dental Medicine. It was, and still is, the state’s only dental school.
A foundation of academic excellence Since its founding, the MUSC College of Dental Medicine has grown into one of the most respected dental colleges in the country. Our students consistently score in the country’s top rankings on their national boards, and competition for admission is extremely high. The 2009 incoming class had a total of 781 applicants from which only 120 received interviews. Less than 60 students are accepted to the undergraduate program annually. We are proud that the average grade point average of an incoming dental students is currently 3.59.
A valuable healthcare resource The College is an important source of dentists in a state that is currently under-served in terms of dental care. About 75 percent of our graduates have chosen to remain in South Carolina, greatly enhancing our citizens’ access to quality dental care.
Ensuring long-term quality care The College also is a valuable resource for the South Carolina’s existing dental community, serving as the state’s leading referral center. An emerging center of discovery Looking ahead, the College plans to round out its educational and clinical programs with a greater emphasis on research, a step certain to put it on the cutting edge of patient care.
Gifts of Any Size Are Greatly Appreciated and Make a Difference! In order to maintain the best patient care, student instruction and research capabilities possible, the Medical University has constructed a new clinical center that will augment the facility where dental students have learned their patient care skills for the past 40+ years. We have re-vamped the pre-clinical laboratory into a state-of-the-art simulation center and have plans to refurbish its sister laboratory, the Simulation Support Lab. The MUSC College of Dental Medicine is rapidly becoming one of the most advanced dental education institutions in the nation.
Through an increase in square footage and a more efficient utilization of space, our new college facilities will help meet the dental needs of South Carolina for many years to come. Specifically, they will: Accommodate more patients and more students. Accommodate the new technologies that have become so integral a part of dental care today. Promote closer interaction between instructors, researchers, care providers and students, resulting in a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to dental care. Provide room to add new residency programs. Provide an environment better suited for research and discovery. Enable the college to provide clinical care in a modern, professional setting. Place the college in a strong competitive position to recruit new faculty. The importance of which cannot be overstated, as the shortage of dental faculty has been cited as one of the more serious challenges to the profession today.
The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine’s new clinical education center, its equipment furnishings and upkeep cost $61 million. The Medical University finalized the project with loans and is seeking private gifts from individuals, businesses and foundations to help pay the loan. With the continued support of our alumni and our friends in the private sector, we will help secure a stronger future for the school.
Opportunity for Partnership We are grateful for the continued interest in our College of Dental Medicine and are hopeful that our alumni and friends will help us take this transformational step in its future. Please consider pledging a tax-deductible, possibly multi-year investment in the new state of the art James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine.
