“Giving to our students now and reducing their debt load insures that they, in turn, will be able to give back early on to the community, our school, and other students.”

Benetta Bell Establishes Scholarship Fund for Minority Dental Students
When she recalls dental school, Benetta Bell, Class of 1985, remembers the financing of her dental education. “Receiving a scholarship can be the difference in an intelligent and gifted student being able to obtain a dental education in South Carolina or not. The cost of a dental education is steadily rising and private funds can help ease that burden. Scholarship funds helped me during my time in dental school.” Realizing that an education is more expensive now than ever, Dr. Bell decided to help future students have the opportunity to study dentistry at MUSC. “Dr. Gary Bell and I hope that this gift will encourage students to stay in our state to receive their education, thereby improving healthcare in South Carolina. Giving to our students now and reducing their debt load insures that they, in turn, will be able to give back early on to the community, our school, and other students.”
It was easy for Dr. Bell to decide she wanted to establish a scholarship. What she didn’t know was how simple it would be to make certain her wishes would be followed in the future. By contributing a life insurance policy to the college and completing a restricted gift agreement, Dr. Bell ensured that the Benetta and Gary Bell Scholarship will be funded and then awarded as she prefers. “We would like to encourage our alumni to use this creative means of giving back to the school that has given us such enriching and satisfying careers. There are so many ways to give. Insurance is one of the ways by which you can be generous early in your professional career. It is a sure way to impact the future of our college and meet your personal goals to improve the future lives of students at MUSC.”
It’s easy to make a gift of a life insurance policy by either designating MUSC Foundation as the new owner or beneficiary. If the owner is non-profit, like MUSC, your policy and premium payment contributions will be eligible for a charitable income tax deduction. In addition to having the satisfaction of knowing your gift is benefiting the college, you also become a member of the Medical University’s Legacy Society. For more information about gifts of life insurance, please contact MUSC Planned Giving Director Toni Jernigan at (843) 792-0002 or Jernigat@musc.edu.
