James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine
Department of Stomatology: Division of Oral Pathology
The Division of Oral Pathology is please to offer a biopsy service for the microscopic diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial lesions. The laboratory currently receives over 4800 specimens each year from clinicians in South Carolina and across the country. Biopsy kits are provided free of charge and include a bottle of 10% neutral-buffered formalin, biopsy request form, and a postage-paid bubble pack envelope for easy return to our laboratory. If you wish to order biopsy kits for your office, please contact us at 843-792-4495.
On the day that specimens are received, they are grossly examined and prepared for overnight processing. In most cases, the specimen is microscopically examined on the next business day and a written report is sent in the afternoon mail. This report includes a gross and microscopic description, diagnosis, appropriate comments, and ICD-9 diagnosis codes. Specimens that require additional procedures such as decalcification, additional slides, or special stains may be delayed before a report can be issued. If you have a FAX machine and wish to have your reports faxed to your office, we will be happy to do so. In such cases, a regular written report still will be sent by mail. In any case with a malignant diagnosis, or whenever additional explanation of an unusual diagnosis is necessary, the clinician will be called by the oral pathologist to discuss the case.
Normally, the patient will be billed for oral pathology laboratory services. The fees for pathology laboratory services are usually covered by the patient's medical insurance, and we accept payments from Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The bill that is sent to the patient will include an explanation about filing insurance.
If you have any questions, you may call the laboratory at (843) 792-2046 or email Dr. Brad Neville at firstname.lastname@example.org.
