Department of Stomatology: Division of Periodontics

 The Division of Periodontics is in the Department of Stomatology. Periodontics is that branch of dentistry which deals with the tissues (gums) surrounding the teeth. The two most common diseases which affect the gum tissues are gingivitis and periodontitis (sometimes called trench mouth or pyorrhea. Treatment of periodontal disease consists of scaling (cleaning), root planing, gum surgery and implants. Other procedures involve occlusal adjustment (adjusting the bite) and occlusal guards (night guards) for (bruxism) grinding of the teeth and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort. Therapy is provided within the College of Dental Medicine by: undergraduates (dental students), residents and faculty (Dental Faculty Practice).
