Dr. Ries received a DDS degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1969 and entered the US Public Health Service, Division of Indian Health. Upon discharge from the USPHS after three years of service he returned to SUNY at Buffalo to earn a PHD degree in Oral Biology with focus on bone biology and during that same period received a dental specialty certificate in periodontology. He has served on the faculties of the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University and the Department of Dentistry, Wake Forest University Medical Center prior to his appointment to the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina as a research investigator in metabolic bone diseases with the Endocrinology Division. In addition, he joined the College of Dental Medicine at MUSC in the Department of Stomatology, Division of Periodontics as a clinician and teacher. As a Diplomate of The American Board of Periodontology he holds appointments at the MUSC Medical Center and the Ralph H. Johnson Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs in Charleston, SC. His bibliography includes many articles and abstracts on bone resorption research.
