Under the leadership of Dr. Michelle Ziegler, the AEGD program is continuing to make strides to offer cutting edge dentistry to benefit both residents and patients.

Dr. Ziegler has a wealth of experience and a passion for treating special needs patients and is making great strides to incorporate this into the residency curriculum. Before joining MUSC as the Director of the AEGD program in June of 2012, Dr. Ziegler was the Director of the GPR program at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey for 10 years. Before running that GPR program, she was the Director of the GPR program at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York for 7 years. Dr. Ziegler brings a wide array of ideas and experiences to help the MUSC AEGD program prepare for growth and opportunity in the near future.

The MUSC AEGD program was established in 2011 and is continuing to evolve into a highly sought after opportunity for dentists to expand their scope of practice and expertise. For potential applicants the program is expanding to five residents in 2013 and possibly six residents by 2014. Dr. Ziegler is also excited to offer residents an additional clinical site for residents to treat pediatric patients as well as those with special needs.

The program offers comprehensive dental services to patients of all ages provided by licensed dentists at reduced fees. Patients are afforded the opportunity to integrate CAD-CAM technology into their treatment, which can include same-day crowns and other state-of-the-art services that reduce wait time and make services more convenient to patients. For more information about the dental services provided or to schedule an appointment, please contact the AEGD program at 843-792-1652.

Over 3,500 toys and bicycles were donated to the Salvation Army as a result of the Angel Tree Program of 2012.

On December 7, 2012, the College of Dental Medicine’s (CDM) staff, faculty, students and residents joined together to support the local community by contributing toys for families and children in need to the school-wide MUSC Angel Tree program and the Salvation Army. These donations will give happier holidays to those who may not have been fortunate enough to receive gifts otherwise.

An Angel parade was held at MUSC to celebrate these donations on December 7th, with performances by the Burke High School Drum Corp. and the Charleston Police Department bagpipers. Even Santa and Mrs. Claus paid a visit.

CDM staff and faculty competed for the best decorated cart, which was used to transport the toys in the parade. Recipient of the “Best Decorated Cart” was Jeanette Craparotta.

Joe Vuthiganon, Bridget Inman and Jeanette were among the many who contributed to the CDM’s participation in the event.

The CDM Gives Back!

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has awarded Dr. Preston D. Miller, JR., with its highest honor, the Gold Medal, awarded for outstanding contributions in the field of periodontics.

The award was given by the AAP with a description of his accolades:

Dr. Preston D. Miller, Jr., has been active in the Academy since 1968, serving on more than 20 AAP committees, representing District 3 on the Board of Trustees for six years, and eventually serving as president in 2006-2007. Dr. Miller has also been involved in the AAP Foundation as a member of its Board of Directors and Visionary Society. He is a peer reviewer for the Journal of Periodontology, has published numerous articles in refereed periodontal journals and contributed to four textbooks, and has lectured extensively throughout the world. In a letter of nomination for this award, one of his peers stated that it would be unusual not to find Dr. Miller’s name among the faculty in nearly every Annual Meeting program over the last several decades. His leadership qualities have been recognized by other dental organizations as well. He served as president of the Southern Academy of Periodontology, the Memphis Dental Society, and the Tennessee Society of Periodontists, and was vice president of the Tennessee Dental Association. In 2003, he was named Tennessee Dentist of the Year. A born teacher, Dr. Miller sold his practice in 2008 and now shares his skills as a clinical professor at the dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina.  (source: American Academy of Periodontics)

Dr. Miller serves as a clinical instructor in the Department of Stomatology at MUSC.
