Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Oral Surgery Residency Program is a 48-month fully accreditated program which is clinically oriented and designed to train residents to astutely diagnose, perform all types of oral surgical procedures, and render adequate supportive care to their patients.

The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery resident is involved in 18 months of training on medical and surgical services within the hospital: six months of general anesthesia, four months of general surgery, three months of neurosurgery, one month of medicine, two months of cardiology, one month of otolaryngology, and one month of emergency room training. General anesthesia training is scheduled within the first year of the residency. After this training, the residents gain extensive experience in ambulatory anesthesia and analgesia.

Four hours each week are devoted to didactic seminars on a variety of subjects relative to oral surgery techniques, patient care, C.P.C.'s, or systems reviews. A number of outstanding guest lecturers are scheduled throughout the year.

The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Service is staffed by three oral surgeons on a full-time basis and three on a part-time basis. A variety of oral maxillofacial surgery problems covering the spectrum of the profession are seen.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program involves extensive training in management of maxillofacial trauma and injuries of soft and hard tissue to the region. The resident has extensive experience in management of severe odontogenic infections and treatment of facial fractures.

Residents are involved in a comprehensive reconstructive and dental implant program. The program covers the full scope of implantology including craniofacial implants, reconstructive bone grafting and total dental rehabilitation. A staff maxillofacial prosthodontist, private practice participation and collaboraoration with the VeteranÕs Administration, provides restorative support and an extensive referral base.

Dr. Durwood E. Bach is the current Program Director and has been since 1995.
