Program Overview

The objective of this program is to develop specialists in endodontics. The advanced specialty education program in endodontics has “initial accreditation” by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. The objective of this program is to develop specialists with a sound academic background on which to base clinical treatment, research and teaching. As many as three graduate students are accepted for matriculation into the program each year.

The clinical component of this program includes:

* examination and testing procedures
* interdisciplinary treatment planning
* odontogenic and nonodontogenic differential diagnosis
* emergency and pain management
* trauma management
* magnification
* initial and retreatment nonsurgical therapy
* surgical therapy
* supportive periodontal therapy
* exposure to implants, osseous grafts and I.V. sedation
* medically compromised patient therapy
* vital pulp therapy
* pediatric therapy
* recall assessment
* case preparation per ABE format

The didactic component of this program includes:

Interdisciplinary treatment planning seminars and case review seminars one half day each per week. Classic and current literature review seminars occur one half day per week in addition to formal endodontic lecture courses.
Emphasis is placed on training clinicians who are competent in all aspects of endodontics, so that they will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Endodontics. Candidates will be required to complete an M.S.D. (Master of Science in Dentistry - College of Dental Medicine) program with an additional curriculum of core courses in the biomedical sciences. The curriculum is flexible enough to accommodate candidates interested in private practice as well as those interested in academics and research.
The M.S.D. program is completed simultaneously with the clinical Certificate program, and there is no option for a Certificate only program. The combined M.S.D. and Certificate program is 26 months in duration. New students are expected to begin their program on June 7, 2010 and no provision is made for other than full time participation in the program.
A research project resulting in preparation and defense of a thesis is mandatory; and preparation of a manuscript suitable for publication is strongly recommended. A copy of the MUSC bloodborne and infectious disease policies are available to the applicant upon request. The graduate student in endodontics will be on call every third week.

Admission Criteria for Program:

Applicants must have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an accredited dental school in the United States or Canada. In general, applicants are expected to have a grade point average of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale). Scores from Part I of the National Dental Board Examination are required for application to the program and must be sent as part of the application package. Scores from Part II of the National Dental Board Examination must be sent as soon as they are available.
It is the policy of the Medical University of South Carolina not to discriminate on the basis of race, creed, national origin or sex in its admissions, employment and other educational activities and programs.
Please note that the completed application and all supporting data must be sent to Dr. Marc Levitan. Applications may be submitted at any time before the application deadline of January 15, 2010, for matriculation into the program beginning June 7, 2010. However, it is strongly recommended to submit applications as early as possible. Applications must be complete for consideration. We invite qualified applicants for personal interviews and select future residents by January 29, 2010. Please contact Dr. Levitan by e-mail with any questions.
