A note from the editors - August 2013
We received some great news this summer: U.S. News & World Report named MUSC the top hospital in South Carolina. This accolade not only serves as a testament to our physicians, faculty and staff – but also to you, our loyal and generous supporters.
MUSC earned national rankings in three adult specialties and three pediatric specialties. To put that into perspective, only 3 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals analyzed nationwide received even a single ranking.
MUSC numbered among the country’s best care for ear, nose and throat, nephrology and rheumatology. In pediatrics, MUSC ranked among the best providers of cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and GI surgery and nephrology.
Perhaps most importantly, though, 85 percent of our patients said they would definitely recommend MUSC to their friends and family. Our stories this month showcase that belief in the work going on around this campus and beyond.
We feature Brice Sharpton, a 16-year-old boy whose father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when Brice was just 3 years old. Brice used a school project to raise money for MUSC’s Murray Center for Research on Parkinson’s and Related Disorders.
We also share the story of a College of Nursing internship that turned high school and college students into mobile application developers in a single summer. Gifts from corporate and individual donors, including AT&T, helped make the program possible.
We hope that you enjoy this edition of Thank-You Notes, and we hope that the news of MUSC’s national rankings makes this month’s stories just a little bit sweeter. Thank you, as always, for helping make these stories and those honors a reality.
