NEWS Medical University hosts dedication of Ashley River Tower The Medical University hosted a special ceremony October 12 to dedicate Ashley River Tower (ART), marking the beginning of a multi-phase expansion project aimed at providing excellence in patient care for all South Carolinians. The 641,000 square-foot hospital will serve as home to MUSC's Heart & Vascular Center and Digestive Disease Center. When the hospital opens in early 2008, it will add 156 beds to the Medical Center, creating room for additional growth in other clinical areas, including the Children’s Hospital, orthopedics and neurology, to name a few. In addition to its highly advanced clinical infrastructure, Ashley River Tower has many softer features designed to enhance the overall patient experience. For example, the entire parking deck under the hospital has been reserved for disabled and emergency patient parking. The floor plan provides patients with maximum privacy as they are being moved between preoperative, surgical and recovery rooms. And the four public corridors running between the hospital’s two buildings will be decorated with art and photography provided by the Gibbes Museum of Art, the South Carolina Aquarium, the Waring Library and local artists. The University is paying for the new hospital with a combination of private gifts and clinical revenues.
