Duke Endowment gift to support four outreach programs
Charleston, SC - Charleston, S.C. (March 8, 2005) - The Duke Endowment has made gifts totaling $458,108 to the Medical University of South Carolina, enabling the institution to expand access to medical homes for children, develop a Hispanic health outreach program and expand geriatric in its medical school curriculum. The endowment further expressed its intent to provide these programs with an additional $454,386 in funding over the next two years, for a total of $912,494.
A portion of The Duke Endowment's recent gift also will fund the third year of a program developed by the Medical University to screen, refer and treat physically and emotionally abused pregnant women in rural South Carolina.
Over the past decade, The Duke Endowment has provided the Medical University with more than $6 million in gifts and pledges, supporting 21 programs and initiatives. MUSC President Ray Greenberg said the Endowment's support had empowered the university to become increasingly proactive in reaching out to medically underserved populations throughout South Carolina.
"Serving the disadvantaged is central to our mission as a public reaching hospital, and The Duke Endowment has consistently demonstrated that it is philosophically aligned with us in that respect," said Greenberg. "Working together, we have been able to bring about positive, enduring changes in the lives of thousands of people. I cannot think of a more meaningful measure of our success as partners."
Established in 1924 by N.C. industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, The Duke Endowment is one of the nation's largest private foundations. Its mission is to serve the people of North Carolina and South Carolina by supporting selected program of higher education, health care, children's welfare, and spiritual life.
