MUSC rolled out the red carpet for children's research
Charleston, SC - In February 2005, The Medical University of South Carolina opened the doors of the Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute (CRI) in Charleston, SC. MUSC Children's Hospital hosted its second annual rock(n)research benefit, presented by Select Health of South Carolina, on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Gaillard Auditorium. Chefs from the Low Country's finest restaurants provided food throughout the evening (COAST, The Sage Room of Hilton Head, Ocean Room at The Sanctuary, Oak Steakhouse, JPaulz, Basil Restaurant and Chai's Lounge and Tapas, Lana Restaurant and Bar, Fleet Landing, and Callie White). Kaminsky's Most Excellent Café provided all of the desserts. In keeping with the rock(n)research theme small wooden rocking horses were hand built and painted by either local artists or celebrities from around the country. These celebrities and artists included NBC's The Today Show hosts, R.E.M, Matthew McConaughey, Cindy Crawford, Andre Bocelli, Billy Joel, Justin Timberlake, Michelle Torres, Felice Designs, Mark Horton, Steve Spurrier, Tommy Bowden and many more.
The highlight of the evening was a performance by Mary Wilson of the Supremes. Songs like 'Stop in the Name of Love,' 'Baby Love,' and 'Love Child' were heard throughout the evening. The evening netted over $115,000 for the Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute.
The CRI is one of 15 in the country and is the largest children's research center in the South. In its first year the CRI has had 81 new discoveries. Most importantly, it will enable MUSC to bring the latest treatments for diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and diabetes, to sick kids in our state and throughout the Southeast.
