Message from the Associate Provost for Education and Student Life

The Division of Education and Student Services was formed in July 2005 to bring together university-level services that support students and their learning.  The new organizational structure allowed us to bridge the gap between academic and student affairs and to put student learning at the center of everything we do. We believe learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom and that our division staff is vital to creating a positive learning environment at the Medical University of South Carolina.

We have transformed in many ways over these two years. Almost everyone in the division moved to new locations as a result of both restructuring and the building of the new hospital. New reporting lines and changes in leadership occurred.

The creation of the Office of Student Diversity as a unit within Student Programs produced the synergy needed to address the needs of both majority and minority students in a more collaborative fashion.

We maximized resources and improved service in the infrastructure areas of finance, human resources, and information technology support by centralizing them. A newly structured and more lean management team was developed to allow more synergy and strategic activity across functions.

As a newly formed unit, it was important for us to develop a common mission, set of values, vision and strategic goals.  We did this in a collaborative fashion that included constituent feedback.

Through a series of retreats and cross unit work groups, we have completed these and are pleased to present them to you along with our annual accomplishments in our first published Division of Education and Student Services Annual Report. In each of the organizational unit reports, you will find more specific information and be introduced to the leaders in those units.  Some of my own goals and accomplishments as Associate Provost for Education and Student Life are included, as well as financial information.

It has been my pleasure to work with this outstanding group of dedicated professionals throughout this process of transformation. Their talents, experience and dedication help make the Medical University of South Carolina the excellent institution that it is.

We welcome your feedback.
