ESL Annual Report | MUSC MUSC Gives Back

Dental students participate in volunteer programs supporting community needs within their profession and in other community causes. Students like Gini Ikwuezunma participate in mission trips to gain experience and to bring health care expertise to the global community.

The MUSC Gives Back Student Volunteer Program gives all students opportunities to hear and learn from the stories of others as they observe and address the health care issues of members of the community they may ultimately serve. While some students take courses that include academic service-learning credits, other MUSC students enhance their education through volunteerism: caring for others and improving the quality of life of our Tri-county, state, and global neighbors.

During 2010-2011, approximately 40% of MUSC’s students contributed more than 17,000 hours of service to over 109 Lowcountry agencies and missions abroad. Considering students are not required to have a mandatory number of community service hours for graduation, these volunteer statistics are impressive.

One of MUSC Gives Back’s signature service projects, the Annual MLK Day of Service Health Info and Kids Fair, offers students an interprofessional activity designed to encourage a marginalized community to make healthy choices. This year’s 22 student teams shared information on safeguarding health to over 200 Charleston Eastside community children and adults.

Throughout the year, students participate in community health and immunization fairs and serve weekly at community health clinics for the underserved. To reduce the incidence of substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco, and drugs) among local K-12 students, students discuss risk factors and teach healthy life habits to public school children.

Other student-sponsored events address social concerns in the community (food, clothing, and personal toiletry items for homeless and migrant populations). Additionally, many future health professionals serve as positive role models to disadvantaged youth through tutoring or mentoring programs.
