Diversity Programs

Graduate Incentive Scholarship

This scholarship is to aid in the financial need of historically under-represented graduate students. Additionally, the eligible student must be a full-time student, a bona fide resident of South Carolina,  a U.S. citizen and remain in good academic standing while receiving the award. The maximum annual amount of a Graduate Incentive Scholars Award will be $10,000 at the doctoral level and $5,000 at the master’s level. Selection of recipients is made by the individual colleges ( Medicine, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Grad Studies, CHP).  This program is subject to appropriate funding from the S.C. State Legislature. Students must sign a contract declaring their intention to pursue their profession in the State of South Carolina. GIS Recipients agree to remain in the State of South Carolina and be employed in the State for a period of (1) year for each $5,000 or part thereof that he/she receives under the Graduate Incentive Scholarship Program.  Recipients are not expected to repay the Graduate Incentive Scholarship while in a residency program where residency applies to degree attainment. Students are also required to verify ongoing state employment for the appropriate term of the loan.

Students who do not remain in South Carolina are required to repay the loan in full should they accept employment elsewhere upon graduation.

National Medical Fellowships

National Medical Fellowships provide need based awards to minority medical and pharmacy students who have been accepted by or are attending accredited schools of medicine. Awards are given to first- and second-year students with special merit awards for junior and senior students. The National Medical Fellowship website is located at: www.nmfonline.org.

SC STATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The South Carolina LIFE Scholarship

The Legislative Incentive for Future Excellence (LIFE) Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship program administered by the financial aid office at each eligible public and independent institution in South Carolina. The LIFE Scholarship may be used towards the cost-of-attendance for up to eight terms based on the students’ initial college enrollment date. Student’s must be enrolled in their first one-year program, first associate’s degree, first two-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree, first baccalaureate degree, or first professional degree. Students with a baccalaureate degree are ineligible.

SC LIFE Scholarship Award Amount:  Up to the cost-of-attendance, not to exceed $5,000.  The funds are generally split between the fall and spring terms.  

General Eligibility Requirements

•  Graduate from high school or complete a home school program as prescribed by law;

•  Attend an eligible South Carolina public or private college or university;

•  Be a South Carolina resident at the time of high school graduation and at the time of college enrollment;

•  Be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident (who meets the definition of a eligible non-citizen according to State Residency Statutes);

•  Be enrolled as a full-time degree-seeking student;

• Certify that he or she has never been convicted of any felonies and has not been convicted of any alcohol or other drug-related misdemeanor convictions within the past academic year;

• Verify that he or she is not in default and does not owe a refund or repayment on any Federal or State financial aid;

• Must not be a SC HOPE Scholarship, Palmetto Fellows Scholarship or Lottery Tuition Assistance recipient.

SC LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement

Students can receive the LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement of $2500 each year if enrolled in a STEM or Health Professions-related field beginning their second/sophomore year in college (based on initial date of college enrollment).  Students may receive Enhancement funding for a maximum of six full-time terms of study toward their first bachelor's degree at an eligible four-year institution in South Carolina.  Students with a baccalaureate degree are ineligible.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • The student must be a recipient of the base LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship.
  • The student completed their freshman year of college.
  • The student completed at least 14 hours of math and science courses during their first year of enrollment. The first year of enrollment includes the fall, spring and summer term immediately preceding.  
  • AP, CLEP, Dual Enrollment, IB classes with score of four or higher, exempted credit hours and Pass/Fail courses with grade of “pass” can all be used to meet this requirement.
  • MUSC majors eligible for LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Enhancement include:
    • Doctorate of Pharmacy
    • Bachelor of Science Nursing :RN-BSN and Accelerated BSN
    • Bachelor of Science Health Care Studies
    • Master of Physician Assistant

Summer LIFE and PALMETTO FELLOWS Scholarships

Participation and Eligibility

•Participation in the summer state scholarship program is voluntary. Summer participation counts as a term of eligibility. The use of LIFE Scholarship and Palmetto Fellows Scholarship in summer term does not extend the terms of eligibility. Students are limited to eight (8) terms of eligibility.

•Students may use the LIFE Scholarship or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship during the summer term if renewal eligibility requirements are met at the end of the spring term and they are enrolled at least 12 credit hours for the summer. Students who want to use their LIFE Scholarship or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship in the summer term must self-identify their interest to the Financial Aid Office.

•A summer term may not be a student’s first term of enrollment.

•Summer state scholarship participants who have met continued eligibility at the end of spring are eligible for a fall award, regardless of their academic performance in summer. The next review period for continued eligibility will be at the end of the following spring term.

•A student must be registered at MUSC to participate. (No transfer, transient or consortium courses are allowed).

Changes in enrollment

If a student drops to less than 12 hours in the summer, your scholarship will be cancelled and you will have to repay funds. Students who are making up scholarship deficiencies during the regular school year (i.e. GPA, number of credit hours) may not receive Life Scholarship or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship in summer. 

Award amounts

Life eligible students receive $2500. Palmetto Fellows eligible students receive $3750.  Enhancement students receive an additional $1250.  Enhancement funds may not be deferred in summer.

Awards are made after spring grades have posted. Students are responsible for their tuition and fee payments charged to their accounts even if the scholarship eligibility is undetermined. Students should plan accordingly.

Summer State Scholarship Programs Application for Life and Palmetto Fellows

Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program

The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship is a merit-based program established in 1988 to recognize the most academically talented high school seniors and encourage these students to attend college in the State.  The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program is administered by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.  Half of the Scholarship is awarded in the fall term and half in the spring term.  The Scholarship must be applied directly toward the cost of attendance, less any other gift aid received. Assuming continued eligibility, Palmetto Fellows may receive Scholarship funding for a maximum of eight full‑time terms of study toward their first bachelor’s degree at an eligible four-year institution in South Carolina.  Students with a baccalaureate degree are ineligible.

Incoming students should complete the Palmetto Fellows Transfer form and submit to the SC Commission of Higher Education.

SC Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Award Amount:  Up to the cost-of-attendance, not to exceed $7,500.  The funds are generally split between the fall and spring terms.

MUSC Scholarships

All MUSC institutional scholarships are handled through the individual colleges, not the Financial Aid office.  The application process, selection of recipients and amount of each scholarship is determined by each college and the process may vary. Contractual Scholarships

Contractual scholarships provide funding to assist students with meeting their educational expenses. In exchange for the scholarship, the student agrees to specified terms/conditions.

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) offers full scholarships to Dental and Medical students interested in the Armed Forces. The Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program pays full tuition/fees and reimburses for books and supplies in addition to a monthly stipend. The student commits to one year of service in exchange for each year of scholarship support received.

INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (IHSP) offers full scholarships to qualified American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate- and graduate-level students. Recipients must be members of federally recognized Tribes and enrolled in an eligible health profession degree program. In exchange for financial aid, scholarship recipients agree to fulfill a service commitment in full-time clinical practice upon completion of their academic or post-graduate clinical training

NURSE CORPS Scholarship Program (NCSP) offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate nursing students (accepted and enrolled). The scholarship pays for full tuition/fees, books, supplies in addition to a monthly stipend. The student agrees to work in a Health Professions Shortage Area (HPSA) for at least two years, after graduation.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program (NHSC SP) offers scholarships to students training in primary care disciplines such as Medicine, Dental Medicine, Physician Assistant, Nurse Midwife or Nurse Practitioner. The NHSC SP pays for tuition and education-related expenses and also provides a monthly stipend for living expenses in exchange for a minimum of two (2) years of full-time service at an NHSC-approved site in a health professional shortage area (HPSA) of greatest need.

Students to Service Program provides scholarships up to $120,000 to medical and dental students in their final year of school in exchange for a commitment to provide primary health care for at least three (3) years at an approved NHSC site in a Health Professional Shortage area.

EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Additional scholarships are available outside of MUSC.
