FAQ's for Volunteering
Frequently Asked Questions for Volunteer Opportunities
Do I really have time to volunteer?
We know how busy your schedules are during the school year, so do not worry if you only have a few hours here and there to volunteer. There are several date-specific projects that only require a few hours or one afternoon. Check out the “Classifieds”, the Want Ads for Student Volunteers for events and details, or search the volunteer database of community opportunities.
As a MUSC student, am I required to volunteer with MUSC GIVES BACK?
Though some course directors and programs have student volunteer service requirements, overall, MUSC students are not mandated to complete a certain number of volunteer hours or even to report their hours to MUSC Gives Back. However, it is a good way for students to get a feel for the different populations they could serve in the future. Some volunteer experiences could be very helpful in determining where your career in health care will take you.
Where can I volunteer?
Check out “The Classifieds”, the Want Ads for Student Volunteers for events and details, or search the on-line volunteer database (Net ID required) of community opportunities exclusively selected that supports the MUSC Gives Back program mission. Of course, you can stop by the MUSC Gives Back office at the Harper Student Center to discuss you volunteer interests and we will help match your skills and passion with a community need.
Note: The MUSC Gives Back Program promotes community volunteer opportunities to the MUSC student Body that meet the mission of the Gives Back program. Keep in mind that MUSC Does not provide any liability coverage for any MUSC student serving as a community volunteer and that the MUSC student body is not to be solicited for any medial assisting services. MUSC students may volunteer and serve under the active license of another healthcare practitioner who accepts the risk for this liability. The student volunteer is responsible for seeing that this condition is met.
After you or your student organization has decided on a specific volunteer event/program, keep your commitment, be dependable, and keep MUSC Gives Back up-to-date on your activities. Click here to report your volunteer hours.

FAQ's for Reporting Hours
Am I required to report my hours?
Students are not required to report their hours, but it is a convenient way to help you keep track of all the community service work you have done while at MUSC. We can print out a detailed report of your volunteer experiences if you have provided us with pertinent information. Doing so will create a volunteer resume that can be used for future letters of reference, CV’s, and scholarship opportunities.
How do I report my hours?
You can report your hours either online or come by the MUSC Gives Back office located in Student Programs and fill out a form by hand.
How often do I need to report my hours?
We recommend that you report your volunteer hours regularly, and best to do so soon following your volunteer experiences. At anytime, students are welcomed to report any service hours performed during their enrollment while at MUSC.
What volunteer hours should I report to MUSC GIVES BACK?
The MUSC Gives Back Program recognizes volunteered hours that increase the value of a student’s education earned at the Medical University by allowing them to address unmet needs in the community and abroad. These volunteer hours should contribute services or resources to an individual, group, non-profit or community initiative who otherwise would be unable to do so for themselves, or promote healthy lifestyle to others. Please be reminded that any volunteer activity served to satisfy MUSC course credit or for professional license requirements, or is deemed as a leadership role for your college, is not reportable.
If I participate in a group service activity, will my hours be reported?
We encourage group leaders to turn in an event report form detailing everyone’s hours after an event. However, if you want to be certain that you get credit for your hard work, it is always a good idea to personally report your hours on an individual report form.
How can I obtain a copy of my volunteer hours?
You may email us at email@example.com to request a copy of your volunteer record. We do not automatically provide them to dean’s offices unless requested. Please allow 3 business days for the office to process your request.
