Meeting Minutes - April 6, 2011

Old Business
Reading of March 23rd minutes:  Approved
Student Parking Registration Results:  1550 spots sold, about 900 still available with spots still available in all lots.  Call Parking Management if anyone needs a spot.
SGA Officer Election Results:  Carol Brown as President, Brandon Hagan Academic VP, Erin Pardue Programs VP, Meg Croom Secretary, Kate Hicks Treasurer.  We had 764 vote, which is better than the last two years.

New Business 
Smoking Resolution Update:  Still waiting to hear back from Beau, but this has been introduced in Columbia, but we don’t know how this was received.  Carol will follow up with this next year.  This was started with Sheldon and I last year.
Last SGA Meeting – Wednesday, April 20th at 6:00 pm at a location TBD.  Please sign up, but take this seriously if you sign up!  Last year we had 16 people not show up that signed up.

Old Business 
MUSC Improv Comedy Night Evaluation:  It was a lot of fun and hilarious.  We didn’t sell out of tickets, so we will be evaluating whether or not this should continue next year. 

New Business

MUSC Student, Staff & Faculty Art/Photo Exhibit: Now-April 29th in HSC Lobby/Gallery.  Joint Reception with Humanitas Committee:  Thursday, April 7th from 4:00-5:30pm in HSC Lobby.  2 Workers needed:  Matt Littlejohn (CHP Rep), Holly Paine (CHP Rep)
4/13 – Free Chamber Music in ECL Lobby, 12:00 noon, and this will continue in May and June
4/16 – Alhambra: Takin’ It Back.  Tickets: $10/students (2 per ID, tickets on sale now in Student Programs Office); Windjammer, Isle of Palms, 12:00-5:00pm with live music, BBQ, volleyball tourney, and more!  Tshirts will be in SPO, so be on the lookout for an email.  You must wear your tshirt to the event.

MUSC Improv Comedy Night Expense report:  $2000 spent with 78 attending, $25/person, $15 overbudget
Natalia Khoma & Volodymyr Vynnytsky concert Expense report:  $190 spent, $210 underbudget
I will email you the overall budget from the year; we are underbudget for the spring
Evaluation/feedback from Habitat for Humanity:  We built walls and helped erect the walls.

New Business

Relay for Life: April 8, 6:00-9:00pm:  Team meeting for this after SGA tonight.  We will have food, drinks, and games.  We also have your tshirts tonight, and the printed tshirts will be at the event on Friday.

Text messaging Weather alerts:  I talked to Dr. Shaw, who spoke with Wayne Brennan in the Risk Management Office.  They are working on solutions to this problem, but they are concerned about sending text messages because it charges the University thousands of dollars to do this and it may charge students as well if they don’t have text message capabilities.  When this system was developed, they made an agreement only to use the system for life-threatening emergencies, but they are going to work on a new system to post on Blackboard/WebCT for this fall.  They will also notify students of cancelled classes by 6 a.m. the day of, and students can also go to the MUSC site or call the MUSC hotline.  She is going to talk to the associate deans at a meeting later this month to see if they have any other suggestions, and she is more than happy to come talk to us if you want her to.
Communications Committee meeting

Intramurals:  Kevin Smuniewski

Summer 5 on 5 Basketball Schedule:  Captains’ meeting at 5:15 on May 31st.  We play Tuesday/Thursday full-court in the evenings beginning June 7th and going through August 4th.

College and Organizational Reports

MUSC Gives Back:  Liz Sheridan
Respond to Student Leadership Banquet by Friday (email: giveback@musc.edu).  We will also be inducting the Student Leadership Society members, and we also have other awards to be given out this evening.

  • Kate Hicks (COM Rep):  There are a lot of great applications for this, so it is a hard decision.
  • Brandon Gates (CON Rep):  Communication is an issue for this, so maybe a representative from each college go back and talk about this, and then we can communicate events campus-wide.

Student Programs
Flag bearers for Commencement:  Thank you for signing up for this, and please remember to attend the training on May 19th at 10:30.  You should have received an email about this from Miriam Hutto.
Spoleto vouchers:  We will still have these, but we haven’t received the same funding, so we won’t have as many.  A Broadcast will go out about this.
Final SGA Dinner:  5-6 pm cash bar Happy Hour, and dinner starts at 6.  Please be on time, and we do give out awards and it will be a fun evening.  Let Nadia know ASAP if you can’t attend.

International Student Association:  Wenjun He; International Bazaar Tuesday, April 19th from 11:30-1:30 p.m. in the horseshoe with entertainment, and food.  I am participating in a Chinese dance from noon-1 p.m.  Please tell your classes about this.

Medicine

Multicultural Student Advisory Board:  Matt Tice; May 7th or 8th will be the last meeting.

Nursing

Pharmacy:  Katherine Shugart; Diabetes Week with seminars during lunch all next week.  Lunch will be free for the 1st 30 people.  There will also be raffle prizes.  You can test your own blood sugar.  BSB 302 Monday, BSB 502 Friday.
