Meeting Minutes - February 29, 2012

Guest Speaker: Debbie Humbert, Parking Management:  Parking registration begins in March.  I am the manager for all campus parking, including for students and employees.  Registration begins March 26th and goes until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28th and all registration is based on seniority.  You can register 24 hours per day.  We have 800 spots available in the A-lot (Bee Street garage), N lot (across from Hardee’s), O, and P, and also off-campus at the Lockwood surface lot and the AA lot at Harborview Tower.   Enrollment Services will notify you when you can register; this is based on seniority.  Be sure to check your address is correct; you can call our office to make sure this is right.  Your address must be correct to mail you your parking pass.  If you list the wrong address and the pass is returned to us, you can pick up your pass in the office.  Once you chose a parking spot, you cannot change it without calling the help desk at 876-CARS.  Please call them immediately if you make a mistake.  If you are not sure if you need a pass or not, it is best to buy one and return it before the semester begins.  If the semester begins and you return your pass, we will buy a portion of it back.  If you buy a pass to share with another student, the two students must come to the Office of Parking Management together so we can change your badge and information in the computer system.  Once student registration is over, retuning students can come in and buy passes in the Office before we open registration to all students.  Last year many spaces were left both on- and off-campus.  Prices are $90/semester for on-campus and $75/semester for off-campus.  Badge access is needed for Bee Street and Lockwood; you will need to fax us your badge or call us with your badge number.  Please be nice to the operators who work with the badge access in the garage.  You must pay for your pass at the time of registration.  There is a separate website that interfaces with payment.  Please let us know if you have any technical problems with this.  We also have after-hour parking for students, but remember you cannot park in these spaces during the day (ex:  you cannot park at the HSC during the day to go to the gym).  These lots are not open on the weekends, even if the gate is open and you may get a citation for parking there.  You should not be parking in patient/visitor parking unless you are actually a patient or visitor.  My email is humbertd@musc.edu if you have any questions!  Also, thank you for making MUSC smoke free!

  • Dr. Burnham:  you are allowed to register based on seniority, which includes the number of semesters and credit hours.  New students cannot register until returning student registration has ended.
  • Carol:  Please tell your classes to make sure their addresses are correct!  Every year students have the wrong address listed.  Also, please make sure your classes are aware of the badge requirements if they are sharing passes.

Flag bearers needed for commencement on Friday, May 18th.  We need one flag bearer from each college.  You cannot be a flag bearer if you are graduating.  Some of the reps have done this in the past, so let us know if you have questions! 

Smoke-free campus March 1st!  There will be a lot of information tomorrow about smoking cessation and there are signs all over campus.  The smoking huts will be taken down tomorrow and plants will immediately be put in place.  Please remind people that the campus is smoke free!  We are not sure how this is going to be enforced, but there is a committee working on this.  If someone refuses to stop smoking, Public Safety or the hospital security can be contacted.  SGA has had a huge role in this and the Board of Trustees really listened to the students with this.

SGA elections:  Brandon Hagan is our new president, Cason Hund is Academic VP, Caroline Hoover is Service VP.  We have a run-off between Emily Allen and Danny Vo for Programs VP and Holly Berry and Kayla Hill for Communications VP.  If any of you have questions about campaigning, contact me.  As detailed in your application packet, there are specific rules for where you can post your flyers/posters.

Winetasting:
  we were at maximum capacity at the Aquarium.  This venue is requiring increased fees.  We may need to change venues in the future or increase ticket prices.  Please list your comments on this as well.

MUSC Student, Staff & Faculty Art/Photo Exhibit
Submissions: March 1-16, Mon-Fri from 9am-5pm.  Drop off 1-2 entries, ready to be displayed, to the Student Programs Office
Artwork displayed April 2-30, Harper Student Wellness Center.  Artwork can be sold at this event as well with 20% of profits going to Student Programs.

Library/Learning Commons Update:  The vending machines in the library were working yesterday.  There is a new law regarding using credit cards and vending machines, but the machines are still accepting cards.  These machines are going to be reset.  Please let me know if you see any machines that are not working.  I talked to Dr. Mauldin about the water dispensers and the engineering facilities wanted more information about what kind of dispensers we want, so we are working on this.  There have been some concerns about the microwaves on the first floor of the library, which we are working with electrical engineers to fix.  Try not to plug them into the same outlet!

University Honor Council Update:  we are reviewing changes by the college honor councils and then I will email it you for review.  Please read over this when it is sent out and we will vote at the next meeting.

  • Winter Basketball Champions!  Competitive champs included a mix of students and non-students and we also had a student team for the non-competitive champs.
  • Soccer update:  league  runs from March 18th through April 29th on Sundays from 1-7 pm in the gym.  This will conflict with softball.  There has been a lot of interest with this, so we are going to try to do this in the fall as well.  March 21st is the due date for the rosters.  Come by Student Programs or email me if someone couldn’t make the event.

Graduate Studies

Health Professions:  Will Wantland—April 15th is the annual Charleston Bed Race.  CHP participates in the set up of this event, which benefits Campy Happy Days Go to the Camp Happy Days website or eventbright.com for more information.  People push a bed around as part of the race.  It is a lot of fun with food and beer.

International Student Association:  Cody Chiuzan--We played Bingo at the Ronald McDonald House on February 17th.  Thanks to Brandon for coming.

Medicine:  Irfan Rhemtulla--Clash of the Classes at HSC and JI this weekend to support an organization for underprivileged boys.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me.
