MUSC Student Government Association

Meeting Minutes - October 26, 2011

Speaker:  Caroline Griggs, Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society:  Ever year PLS sponsors a leadership conference.  This year will be the 10th year and will be in January at Trident Tech Center in North Charleston, where Don Yaeger  will be speaking on “What Makes the Great Ones Great,” with an emphasis on how to sell yourself and make yourself great.  He has worked with professional athletes to help with branding.  This is targeted to all healthcare professionals, although CE credit is available for the pharmacists in attendance.  We are asking SGA to sponsor 5 students from each college, which comes to a total of $1350 at $45 per person.  We think that by sponsoring students, it will be a great way to increase the opportunities for MUSC students.  Last year 3 students from each college were sponsored except for CDM.  We have already had a COM student sign up for this year.

Reading of October 12th minutes:  approved

SC Graduate Student Health Insurance Summit:  USC sponsored this and tried to involve the state universities.  This was broadcasted from MUSC, but attendance was poor overall with only one student there.  There were only 9 online participants viewing the broadcast.  This was disappointing because many students are opinionated on student health insurance, but no one came to hear about change and the questions with the bid process.  USC said the only way to lower premiums is to have all students participate and they want student insurance mandated.  This would mean we would have to have USC undergrad students would have to have student health insurance, which would be a huge change.  They did say it was possible for MUSC students to have a base plan with additional options if some students need special coverage.
