Meeting Minutes – January 23, 2013
Speaker: Kristin Cochran, Director of Recruitment and Student Program (South Carolina Area Health Education) Consortium – Primary Care Week is a national event held annually to highlight the importance of primary care and bring health care professionals together to discuss and learn about the general and interdisciplinary health care, particularly its impact on and importance to underserved populations. MUSC has chosen to hold this event in January. Next week, from January 28th – 31st, we will be hosting presentations in BSB 100 at noon. Lunch provided to the first 75 students. Brandon Hagan: Yes, Mr. MUSC Pageant will not eligible for SGA allocations next year. Organizations are allowed to ask 3 times for allocation funds but not more than 2 times consecutively.
Allocations request passed.
Budget Review: Spring 2013 Budget 2nd read – Cason Hund: There have been some new breakthroughs with the recent Oyster Roast costs. Danny will go over those.
Danny Vo: The Oyster Roast was a lot of fun. I have an evaluation sheet that is being passed around. Please provide your comments on the entertainment, food, venue, etc. I also have a sheet for feedback from the exam breaks from last semester. Food was the most expensive cost for the Oyster Roast at $18,785, followed by beer at $5,397, and entertainment at $3,000. A total of $35,602 was spent on the event. We made $17,835 with ticket sales with a total of 638 people in attendance. Our total expense was $17,767.

SGA Elections: The elections for SGA officers are coming up in March. Applications will be available by the next SGA meeting. We should also have some applications available online and in the Student Programs Office. Feel free to ask us any questions about our position or sit in on an exec meeting. Cason, Caroline, and I will not be here next year.

MUSC SGA Oyster Roast Evaluations
Exam Break Evaluations
Improv Comedy Night @ Theatre 99: Tickets are currently sold out. The event is tomorrow night. A reception begins at 7pm and Showtime begins at 8pm. Please arrive before show time as the doors will close at 8pm! The ticket cost includes one drink ticket. Free appetizers and a cash bar will also be provided.
Night at Halsey Gallery: Friday, February 1st an art exhibit featuring Lesley Dill will be showcased at the Halsey Gallery located at 161 St. Philip St. Drinks and light appetizers will be provided. Bring your Driver’s License if you would like to drink wine. This event is FREE for MUSC students, employees, and their guests. 5pm. There will be about 14 worker spots for this event and they will be sent out soon.
Make your own Valentine: From February 1st through February 14th, 8:30am – 4:30pm, crafts will be provided to make your own valentine in the Student Programs Office. The poster for this event says we provide the crafts, you supply the love.
Fat Tuesday: Tuesday, February 12th 11:30am – 1:15pm will be Fat Tuesday in the Horseshoe. Music by Wanda Johnson, food vendors, and free beads will be provided. You will receive specialty beads if you donate 2 or more canned goods or $2.
Jostens: Jostens will be on campus February 11th and 12th at Fat Tuesday for those who are graduating to look at graduation rings, invitations, and announcements. There will be a 15% discount.

Regina Brown: Relay for Life is the night before Alhambra? Is there any way that we can collaborate in the future so the dates do not coincide?
Danny Vo: We plan this date in early summer so there was no conflict at that point.
Brandon Hagan: Yes, we can collaborate on a date in the future.
Igor Alvarez: Relay for Life ends at an earlier time for that reason.
Programs Committee Meeting: We will be planning the theme for Alhambra!
ACADEMIC VICE PRESIDENT: Cason Hund
Library Learning Commons Update:
- Seating capacity on third floor increased by 200 seats
- New chairs for computers and furniture to match that on the third floor is on order for the second floor
- Couches and chairs from the College of Nursing building are being moved into areas of the library to expand seating
- Seven small study rooms were added bringing the total to 14
- Thirty-three electrically wired study pods were added
- Study space will continue to be upgraded and expanded when possible
- The Library was the first place on campus to benefit from the wireless upgrade to improve coverage and performance speed
- Mobile whiteboards increased from 6 to 40, with additional whiteboards mounted on walls in each small study room; each one heavily used throughout a semester
- Two large mobile flat screen monitors were added for students to share a computer desktop during group study; also each one heavily used
- The Learning Commons Technologists provide ongoing support for students, faculty and staff needing help with computers and mobile devices
- Reference librarians are providing numerous training sessions on the use of mobile apps
- 10 iPads along with Kindles, digital cameras, Flip video cameras and a mobile miniature projector are available for checkout
- Faculty, staff and students can reserve a classroom to practice a presentation (including the ability to videotape a practice session)
- The Learning Commons has partnered with the Center for Anatomical Studies and Education (CASE) to create a collection of high-end 3D anatomical models available for all student use
- A coffee service and a healthy vending machine were installed on the first floor

COMMUNICATIONS VICE PRESIDENT: Kayla Hill
Clarion Competition Team Sign up: The deadline for the Clarion Competition is the Friday, January 25th at 5pm. Please spread the word to your classmates! In this event, students from various MUSC colleges form a team and delve into case studies of a sentinel event to find root cause analysis and provide recommendations to improve patient health outcomes. The winning MUSC team advances to the national competition at the University of Minnesota to compete. They also win a $3000 prize. $2000 is also awarded to 2nd place and $1000 to 3rd place. Intramurals - Kevin Smuniewski:
Indoor Soccer: We had the captain’s meeting last night. Come by the office and grab a packet if you missed the meeting or you can download a roster from the intramurals website. The deadline to turn in your roster is February 6th. Games will be on Sundays from 1pm-7pm from February 10th – April 22nd.
College and Organizational Reports
MUSC Gives Back – Liz Sheridan:
MLK Day of Service: The next planning meeting is on Monday, February 4th at 12pm in BSB 100. Limited box lunches will be available. This is an interdisciplinary activity. At least 2 disciplines must come together. It’s a lot of fun. The event will be hosted at the Meeting Street Academy this year.
MUSC Student Blood Drive Challenge: The participants of the winning College will be entered in a drawing for 4 free MUSC SGA Alhambra tickets (4-13-13). Please set your appointment at www.redcrossblood.org. Search by zipcode (29403) or by date/drive location. The dates are below:
- February 14th, 11am – 4pm in HSC gym
- Friday, February 15th, 11am – 7pm in hospital fixed site Rm 259
- Monday, February 14th, 6am – 2pm in hospital fixed site Rm 259
The fixed site has expanded their hours to accommodate students.

Student Programs – Dr. Burnham:
MLK Essay Contest: This event was a great success. The winning essays are posted on website. Congratulations to Stephen Thompson for winning first place.
Earl B. Higgins Achievement in Diversity Awards Nominations: The MUSC’s Office of Student Diversity is seeking nominations for the Earl B. Higgins Achievement in Diversity Awards and Student Leadership in Diversity Award. Electronic submissions are recommended and the deadline for submission is Friday, February 1st at 5pm. We get a lot of nominees for that and already have a lot. Please send those reminders back out. I will send a reminder out to Kayla. You can also self-nominate. Thank you all for everything and see me if you have any questions.
Nancy Lemon: If student organizations don’t get their information to me, they will miss out on opportunities like the Leadership banquet and the Volunteer/Activities Fair. Please email me if there are any organizations in your college that are not in the handbook.

Nancy Lemon: The student handbook is online.
Dorothea Gadsden: Work study students are needed in Student Programs Office. Students need to be available 10-20 hours a week to work in a fun, interactive environment. We are looking to hire 3-4 students. Perks include 2 free admission tickets to events if they work that day and a lenient schedule. MUSC Gives Back is also looking for 1 student worker as well. Flyers are posted up around campus. They don’t include the MUSC Gives Back information but direct any student interest to me and I will get them in contact with Liz Sheridan. University wide Committees
Brandon Hagan: Please bring information about your college’s events to SGA. I know there are so many events that happen on this campus that people don’t know about so they don’t attend. It’s important to know these things so please do your job and inform everyone.
There are free dental screenings, Monday – Thursday from January 14th through March 28th from 5pm – 7pm at the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine MUSC clinic, first floor at 29 Bee St. The dental screenings will be performed by senior dental students to determine if you would be an acceptable patient for a dental licensure examination. This screening does not make you a patient of the College of Dental Medicine. Patients must be 18 years of age. The clinic will be closed on Valentine’s Day, February 21st, and Spring Break from March 11th – 14th.
Steven Holshouser: How do you sign up?
Brandon Hagan: You can just show up during hours. They will take an x-ray, but it won’t cost you.
Health Professions – Chayla Handley:
The PA program is having a bake sale in the main hospital by Starbucks this Friday from 11am-2pm. Proceeds are going to charity. Please come out and support them.
The OT Class of 2014 is having their 3rd annual chili cook-off on Thursday, February 7th in the Horseshoe. Anyone can enter. I plan on entering. It will cost $5 to try 6 chilis and an additional $1 to try an additional chili. Information is being sent out in the broadcast messages. Encourage people to come out.

International Student Association
Medicine – Regina Brown: Some students from my class have an idea for a stress reliever for Study week. Several other colleges have hosted a puppy room as a stress reliever. One of COM’s dean, Dr. Kirn said this would be a good idea not only for students, but also for patients. Also the puppies, from the Humane Society, have a chance of getting adopted.
Dr. Burnham: On a side note, does anyone have any information about the charity ball? We’re just curious.
Thomas Tyner: I think it’s just COM students and alumni.
Dr. Burnham: No, other students are invited. Please let us know when you all find out more information.
Multicultural Student Advisory Board
Pharmacy – Kathryn Holt: Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society is holding its 11th annual leadership conference on Saturday, February 2nd at the College Center at Trident Technical College in North Charleston. The conference will be from 8:30am – 4:00pm. The cost is $45 and includes a guest speaker, Mr. David McNair, breakfast, and lunch.
James Atkison: I think we should start the sign up sheets at the beginning of the meeting. They didn’t get around last time and they usually never do.
Caroline Hoover: They set on the table outside after meeting.
