MUSC Student Handbook

Associate Provost Welcome Letter

Dear Students,

Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to the Medical University of South Carolina!  You made an excellent choice by selecting MUSC, and we made an excellent choice in selecting you.  We look forward to working with you as you pursue your academic studies and share your joy and excitement about your future as health care professionals and biomedical scientists.

Because we believe your success as a student is dependent on your overall well being, we are committed to supporting your academic, physical, financial, and social needs through a comprehensive set of services.

Our Center for Academic Excellence and Writing Center stand ready to provide supplemental instruction and assistance with any course or assignment.  You have free access to our state-of-the-art Wellness Center, a wonderful way to stay fit and learn the importance of physical health.  Student Health Services (SHS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provide outstanding, confidential care.  Financial Aid Services will help you obtain loans and scholarships.  Student Programs coordinates social and cultural activities, advises the student government, and provides housing assistance.  The Office of Student Diversity supports all students, while building inter-cultural understanding on campus.  The “MUSC Gives Back” program coordinates volunteer opportunities and service learning projects to teach about health care and improve the quality of life in our community.

Integrated into your experience at MUSC is Creating Collaborative Care (C3), the university's initiative to promote interprofessional education by providing opportunities to develop teamwork competencies, and to work collaboratively and effectively in a variety of health care delivery and research settings.  We stress the importance of learning to collaborate interprofessionally because effective teams improve patient outcomes.

We want your experience at MUSC to be rewarding intellectually and a joyous time – when you make friends for life, learn to work effectively as a member of the health care team, and achieve all of your goals.  To thrive as health care leaders in the future, you will require outstanding professional and personal qualities.  Important lessons will be learned in your classrooms and clinical settings.  Also important are the values, leadership, and interpersonal skills you will acquire outside the classroom.  The student life staff is dedicated to helping you learn and achieve your dreams.  Please call on us – we are here to serve you.

Best Wishes,

Darlene Shaw, Ph.D.
