MUSC Student Handbook
Welcome Letter from the President
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Medical University of South Carolina. The faculty and I are pleased that you have chosen to pursue your education here. We will strive to provide you with a learning environment that is challenging, yet supportive of your personal interests and needs. We want you to succeed while you are here, and equally important, we want to prepare you for your life and work beyond the Medical University.
For those of you who will be pursuing clinical careers, part of your education will take place in the Ashley River Tower, one of the most advanced teaching hospitals in the country. This state-of-the-art hospital is dedicated to the care of patients with heart, vascular, cancer and digestive diseases. In it, you will be exposed to the latest technology and will work in an environment that is both beautiful and efficient. Many of our students also will be prepared for their clinical work in the Simulation Laboratory located in the College of Nursing. Our students in the College of Health Professions will receive their coursework in a facility that is technologically sophisticated, yet warm and personal. Our dental students will have the benefit of working in the new, cutting edge James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine Building, arguably the most advanced facility of its kind in the country. Those of you pursuing careers in research may have the opportunity to work in either the Drug Discovery Building or the Bioengineering Building, both of which opened in 2012.
These new facilities are transforming the appearance of our campus. We are pleased to provide you with some of the most advanced educational environments anywhere in the country. We believe that the quality of your education will benefit directly from these innovative resources, but in the final analysis, the process of learning is most influenced by the quality of the student-teacher relationship. On this campus, you will find outstanding teachers who are dedicated to your education as a health professional and as a citizen. The faculty join me in welcoming you to the Medical University family, and we wish you success in all your endeavors.
