Biography

Dr. Suzanne Thomas received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology/Neuroscience from the University of South Carolina in 1996. Following an NIH post-doctoral fellowship in addiction research, she joined MUSC’s faculty in 1998. Her research examines how one’s response to stress confers risk for substance use disorders and how altered stress reactivity affects relapse in those with alcohol dependence.

While she continues to conduct scientific studies in this area, her primary role at MUSC is in university administration. She is the Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness (IE), establishing the strategy the university uses to evaluate its performance on its strategic goals and in its mission as an academic health sciences center.  IE uses applied research methods to help the university and its component units make data-informed decisions, engage in continuous quality improvement, demonstrate stewardship and accountability, develop targeted improvement plans, and allocate resources to the university’s best advantage.

Dr. Thomas is a member of MUSC's Provost's Council, Education Advisory Council, and the enterprise-wide Strategic Advisory Council.  She chairs the Department of Psychiatry's promotion and tenure committee and the university's student complaint committee. She is the university's Accreditation Liaison to SACSCOC and is a graduate of the Harvard Leadership Development Institute.
