WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE

The Medical University of South Carolina ranked high in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings for best graduate schools in the country in the area of primary care. “We are very pleased with the recognition of our primary care program as a leader in the Southeast and in the nation,” said Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., MUSC president. “This is a fitting tribute to the hard work of our dedicated faculty, staff, and trainees.”

The Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina was established in 1970 as one of the first university-affiliated departments in the country.  We have graduated over 370 family physicians and currently have 36 residents.  Our graduates have excelled in both private practice and have become leaders in family medicine education.  In addition to the residency program, our department and faculty have become nationally known for the computerized patient record, health maintenance reminder system, community-oriented primary care projects, and environmental and occupational medicine division.  Our faculty also have expertise in sports medicine, Balint training, procedural skills, quality improvement, substance abuse, and women's health issues.
