Prevention, Health, and Wellness in Family Medicine 
Cardiovascular disease, lung disease and cancer are the most common conditions in the United States and are in large part preventable. One of the main focuses of the Department of Family Medicine is comprehensive preventive clinical care, with an academic focus on education and research in the area of prevention and wellness. Prevention Grand Rounds Informative lectures are held for those who would like to attend simultaneously at two locations (with video-link) on Fridays at 12 noon, in the Family Medicine Conference/classroom, at 295 Calhoun St, and at the Trident Family Medicine Conference room, on the campus at Trident Hospital. 2011 Prevention Grand Rounds January 21, 2011—“Prevention of Trauma” -- Dr. Samir M. NCQA Recognitions The department received the elite rank by becoming a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). Family Medicine achieved a level 3 PCMH rating by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) which is the highest level of recognition. Prevention and Public Health Elective The department offers electives to 4th year medical students. Below is one of the electives that is based completely on prevention and community health care. For more information on electives please visit our Medical Student Rotations page. Course Title: Prevention and Public Health Course Location: Downtown Family Medicine Clinic. Course Description: Students will rotate in various public health and primary settings, see patients, participate in community and employee screening, Health department clinics, and community health center clinical care. Students will learn basic public health and prevention principles and learn how these can be applied on a community and population basis as well as on an individual basis. Students will be exposed to public health leadership and advocacy opportunities.
Course Objectives: - Learn the rationale and methods that are the foundation of prevention services, and to be able to define primary, secondary and tertiary prevention
- Learn the basic tenets of public health science, social justice, advocacy, and the relevance and connection between public health and primary care
- To be able to determine, by age, gender and the presence or absence of risk factors, which preventive services are indicated for a given patient
- To be able to describe the local public health resources and facilities available in the Lowcountry area
