John Vournakis, Ph.D.
Vice President for Research and Development; Marine Polymer Technologies, Inc. & Admune Therapeutics, LLC
Dr. John Vournakis is the Vice President for Research and Development at both Marine Polymer Technologies, Inc. and Admune Therapeutivcs, LLC. He is a Professor of Graduate Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to joining the MUSC faculty in 1995, he held professorships at Syracuse University and Dartmouth College.
Dr. Vournakis has been elected to the National Academy of Inventors in 2013.
Dr. Vournakis has many years of biotechnology and university management and administrative experience including his time as Senior Vice President and CEO of Genmap Inc., Vice President of Science at Verax Corporation, Director of the Molecular Genetics Center at Dartmouth College, and Associate Director of the Center of Molecular and Structural Biology at MUSC. Dr. Vournakis has also been involved in numerous consulting activities for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He is a recently retired member of the Albion College Board of Trustees.
Dr. Vournakis has served as an editor and reviewer of multiple scientific publications and has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and numerous peer-reviewed research grants. Dr. Vournakis’ educational background includes a BA degree in Chemistry and Physics from Albion College, a PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from Cornell University, and postdoctoral training at M.I.T. and Harvard University.
