The Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine is committed to the promotion of cultural understanding and cultural competency. Towards that end, an effort has been made to provide some tools to enhance skills among those who practice medicine and serve their communities. Providing culturally competent care implies having the capacity to function effectively within the context of cultural beliefs, behaviors, and needs presented by our consumers and their communities. As a result, “we reduce health disparities, improve patient care and satisfaction, decrease malpractice risk and insurance cost and increase compliance with the Joint Commission."1 The resources below will assist in the development of skills in cultural understanding and cultural competency: - "A Physician’s Practical Guide to Culturally Competent Care" - US Department of Health and Human Services: Offices of Minority Health
