Health Insurance

t is a MUSC policy that all enrolled students have health insurance coverage. Students are welcome to find their own insurance coverage on the open market, be covered on a spouse or parent's insurance, or obtain coverage through Pearce and Pearce, Inc. Proof of health insurance must be provided to the MUSC Student Health Office.

Pearce and Pearce, Inc offers multiple payment options. Students should read the policy information carefully, particularly the area that pertains to being screened by Student Health before seeking treatment elsewhere and pre-existing conditions.

Students who receive stipend support directly from the College of Graduate Studies and who choose Pearce and Pearce, Inc for their insurance provider may have their premium paid by the College of Graduate Studies. To take advantage of this option, a student will need to do the following:

  1. Register for Pearce and Pearce, Inc coverage via the website listed above. Beginning with Fall 2007, Pearce & Pearce premiums will be automatically billed on your tuition bill unless you "opt out" by the date advertised by Student Health.
  2. Provide a copy of your tuition bill to Mrs. Karla Locklear, College of Graduate Studies, room 101 Bioengineering Bldg. This must be done for the Fall and Spring and Summer semesters.
  3. The effective start date of your insurance will be August 20, 2012 as long as you register prior to that date.
  4. Please note, this only applies to students receiving stipend support directly from the College of Graduate Studies. Student's receiving their stipend support via a departmental source, need to contact that department to determine how they prefer to handle health insurance payments/reimbursements.

Students receiving health insurance via their spouse or parents, need to do the following to be reimbursed:

  1. Provide proof of payment, such as pay stubs to Mrs. Karla Locklear, College of Graduate Studies, room 101 Bioengineering Bldg., if receiving a stipend from the College of Graduate Studies or to your department if receiving stipend support from them. A copy of a pay stub will need to be provided for each pay period or a letter will need to be provided from the employer. Reimbursements will only be made per the dates included in the letter/pay stubs up to the date of the letter and not for future payroll withholding. You may black out the salary amount and any other information on the pay stub that you do not want anyone else to see.
  2. Provide a rate schedule that shows the individual rate for the employee/spouse and also a rate with child/spouse coverage.
  3. Reimbursements will be processed on a frequency of not less than quarterly, i.e. weekly or monthly reimbursements will not be processed.
  4. The total reimbursement for the year cannot exceed the annual Pearce and Pearce rate.

Students purchasing health insurance via other sources or who pay Pearce and Pearce directly themselves, need to do the following to get reimbursed:

  1. Provide proof of payment that includes the name of the vendor, name of the student, the amount paid and for what time period the coverage is for. Please provide this documentation to Mrs. Karla Locklear, College of Graduate Studies, room 101 Bioengineering Bldg. if receiving stipend support from the College, or provide this to your department if receiving stipend support from them.
  2. Reimbursements will be processed on a frequency of not less than quarterly, i.e. weekly or monthly reimbursements will not be processed.
  3. The total reimbursement for the year cannot exceed the annual Pearce and Pearce rate.
