General Information

Program dates: May 30, 2016 to August 5, 2016

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) offers outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on cutting edge biomedical research projects. Participants in this 10-week program are to perform at a graduate student level. Students are placed with faculty members to work with faculty on an individual basis or as part of a research team. Research teams may also include graduate students, post docs, Medical Students, research scientists and other SURP students.
During the 10-week program, participants will be taught important research skills and techniques. In addition, there is a mandatory seminar series component to the program with tracks in Cardiovascular Biology, Cancer Biology, Neuroscience and Marine BioMedical Environmental Health. SURP participants are expected to pursue substantive research projects over the course of the program and are required to make a full-time commitment (at least 40 hours per week) to their research as guided by their faculty research mentor. Students will be required to write a research paper summarizing their projects and will also be required to make a presentation to their fellow participants, faculty mentors and others at the end of the program. SURP students are registered for CGS 761-Laboratory Observation and Apprenticeship, a 15-hour course that appears on an MUSC transcript.

SURP participants are encouraged to build both social and academic networks with one another and with members of the university community. Participants are encouraged to organize and coordinate activities with their peers during off-hours. The Graduate School provides planned activities and events for all SURP participants. Participants may not enroll for classes or hold other employment during the period of the program.

Financial Support and Housing

Applicants should be eager to immerse in research and self-sufficient enough to arrange their own travel.
SURP participants will receive a living allowance of $400.00/week for a total of $4000.00 to help pay for expenses while participating in the SURP.  For those students living outside of the greater Charleston area, we have secured convenient and brand-new housing with a private developer. These 1 bedroom 1 bath apartments are designed for double occupancy and have a kitchen and washer/dryer. The units are located approximately three quarters of a mile from the MUSC campus. They will be offered on a first come first serve basis to SURP students at a reduced rate.  For students who need housing,  a housing allowance of at least $1000 will be provided.
