Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year The MUSC Gay Straight Alliance welcomes all new and returning students. We had many successes last year including hosting a number of coffee talks with discussions on adoption by gay couples with Warren Redman-Gress, an update on Proposition 8 in California with Susan Dunn, and a discussion on religion and homosexuality with Reverend Danny Reed from the Unitarian Church in Charleston and Pastor Bob MacFarlane of Circular Congregational. GSA members participated in various community events including the It Gets Better Vigil and the Francis Marion Forest Clean up. Both the Fall Social and the Second Chance Prom were enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the hard work of everyone involved, we were able to raise $3,000 for We Are Family, a local organization benefiting GLBT youth in the Charleston area.
For the upcoming school year, we hope to have new and returning members join us for what we hope will be an equally exciting year. We would love to see everyone at our upcoming events. Check in throughout the year to see what we are up to. We also welcoming you to join our e-mail list and facebook group (MUSC Gay Straight Alliance) to get reminders and information about our events.
Upcoming Events
Wednesday September 14: Monthly Meeting
Wednesday, September 14 at 12 noon in EL 109 will be our first monthly meeting in which we will discuss our plans for the school year. Lunch will be provided for the first 25 attendees. We welcome everyone new and returning to join us. Consecutive monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month in EL 109.

We encourage our straight allies to join us for all events! Wednesday, September 28: Coffee Talk
Our first Coffee Talk of the year will be at 5 PM on Wednesday, September 28 in room Gazes 125. Coffee talks are informal round table discussions where we often bring a guest speaker in from the community to address a GLBT topic on medicine and social issues. Coffee talks are held on the last Wednesday of every month at Gazes auditorium located at 114 Doughty street. Saturday, November 12 Join us for our annual Fall Social event on November 12. The event will be held at a historic downtown home and will feature a full spread of food and beverages. This is a great opportunity to get to know other members of the group and to enjoy a relaxing evening. Tickets must be picked up in advance at the student programs office. Details will be forthcoming as the date approaches. March 2012 This March the MUSC GSA will be hosting our fourth annual “Second Chance Prom”. The prom is a fundraiser to benefit the local non-profit organization We Are Family (WaF), which provides a ‘Safe Space’ for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, queer, and questioning youth between the ages of 16 and 23. The presence of this safe environment, and the peer and professional support it provides is invaluable, particularly for teenagers and young adults coming out and living open lives in Charleston. WaF is one of the only organizations of its kind in South Carolina. Last year we were able to raise over 3,000 to donate to We Are Family. In past years, the event has featured the crowning of a prom king and prom queen, a photo booth, a raffle, silent auctions, and drag queen performances. Last years sponsors included: Stuart Laurence, Starbucks, Stella Nova, Imagies, Cinebarre, Charleston Beer Exchange, Sugar, Eye Level Art, Kronic Coffee, and many others. We hope to see everyone there! More information will be available as the date approaches
