Administers database management systems for a large mainframe data processing installation; oversees the development of data standards, documentation and security and authorization procedures; serves as a key advisor to the data processing manager in defining

Plans, organizes and controls the activities of database systems.
Supervises the work of lower-level database administrators, specialists and other technical support staff.
Installs and tests database management systems and related systems.
Manages the physical descriptions of database components; develops standards, data definitions, documentation and design of security systems.
Establishes and maintains contact with vendors for software package support and problem resolution.
Maintains system integrity and compliance with standards; conducts tests to determine the integrity of databases.
Monitors and measures the performance of the database; reports problems to the appropriate individuals.
Helps to ensure maximum on-line availability of the database.
Meets with customers to determine information needs and database requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of database management systems, concepts and design methodologies.
Knowledge of database structures, operating systems, data security, systems integrity and monitoring and auditing activities.
Ability to integrate technical systems with agency goals and objectives.
Ability to prepare and present technical and non technical reports in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to establish positive working relationships with technical staff, customers and others involved in database management.
Ability to manage subordinate technical staff in the design and support of database management systems.

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or information systems and experience in systems development and maintenance, technical support or the support of mainframe database management systems.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or information systems and four years experience in systems development and maintenance, technical support or the support of mainframe database management systems.
