General Nature of Work:

Provides primary health care to individuals and families.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class is intended for use at the entry level.

Examples of Work:

Records health histories.
Performs health examinations, including physical and developmental evaluations.
Plans and implements a regimen of care for health maintenance and executes a plan of preventive maintenance.
Collaborates with members of the health care team in evaluating the effectiveness of health care plans.
Counsels and educates patients and their families.
Supervises a medical care regimen for chronically ill patients under orders from a physician.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of interviewing and recording medical histories.
Knowledge of health appraisal equipment and laboratory findings.
Knowledge of community resources and their application to health care.
Ability to counsel individuals.

State Minimum Training and Experience

State Necessary Special Requirements:

Positions in this classification require licensure as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Some positions require a valid driver's license.

Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and experience as a registered nurse.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and six months experience as a registered nurse.

(Note: The following descriptions are applicable to this section: Continuous - 6-8 hours per shift; Frequent - 2-6 hours per shift; Infrequent - 0-2 hours per shift)

Ability to perform job functions in an upright position. (Continuous)

Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous)
