State Specifications:

General Nature of Work:

Performs entry-level engineering work in the assigned specialty area.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics:

Incumbents who are registered as Professional Engineers by the South Carolina Board of Engineering Examiners will be entitled Engineer I as prescribed by South Carolina Code Section 40-22-30. Incumbents who are not registered will be entitled Engineering Associate I. Some positions involve field supervisory responsibility.

Examples of Work:

Prepares designs, drawings, plans and specifications for construction projects, engineered systems, technical equipment or components.
Conducts field studies or surveys to collect technical data.
Tests or evaluates technical materials, equipment, systems and facilities for function and capacity.
Supervises or performs the installation, maintenance and repair of technical equipment.
Supervises technical testing, survey or field engineering teams.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of applicable engineering theory, methods and practices.
Skill in the use of applicable engineering equipment and instrumentation.
Ability to apply sound engineering principles to the solution of routine technical problems.
Ability to perform complex mathematical and engineering calculations.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to oversee the work of technical and skilled-trade subordinates.

A bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture or engineering technology.
