State Specifications:

General Nature of Work:

Investigates, reconciles or disposes of complaints, claims, inquiries or violations of laws or regulations; conducts inspections or surveillances of businesses and individuals; examines accounts, credits and related records.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics:

Investigators in this class conduct the most complex or sensitive investigations and often supervise other investigators.

Examples of Work:

The omission of specific statements does not preclude management from assigning specific duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. The intent of the listed examples is to give a general indication of the levels of difficulty and responsibility common to all positions in this class.)

Investigates regulated activities to ensure compliance with federal, state or municipal laws.
Locates and interviews plaintiffs, witnesses or representatives of business or government to gather facts relating to alleged violations.
Collects information to be used as evidence in investigations; operates audio/video equipment in surveillances; conducts searches and seizures.
Observes conditions to determine if there has been a law violation relating to such activities as revenue collection, employment practices or benefit claims.
Examines business, personal or public records and documents to establish facts and authenticity of data.
Investigates suspected misuses of licenses or permits.
Prepares correspondence and reports of investigations for use by administrative or legal authorities; researches causes of action.
Testifies in court or at administrative proceedings concerning findings of investigations.
Serves legal papers.
Investigates and responds to oral and written complaints, claims or inquiries; negotiates settlements with claimants or claimants' representatives.
Conducts informal hearings or conciliation meetings to resolve complaints or disputes.
Plans and presents seminars, workshops and other presentations.
Supervises investigations; schedules and distributes work; evaluates work of staff to ensure proper performance and completion.
Selects and trains new staff members.
Conducts ongoing research to identify new information or sources of information that may aid the investigative process.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations applicable to the job.
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, techniques, practices and principles of conducting investigations.
Ability to evaluate evidence and conduct investigations.
Ability to analyze complex situations, determine pertinent facts, reach reasonable conclusions and propose solutions.
Ability to present clear, concise and comprehensive written and oral reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law officers, judicial personnel, professional and nonprofessional individuals and the general public.
Ability to supervise and train subordinates.
Ability to respond professionally during stressful situations.
Ability to plan, organize and direct investigative programs.
Ability to physically perform the required job duties.

State Minimum Training and Experience

State Necessary Special Requirements:

Some positions require certification by the Department of Public Safety in accordance with § 23-6-430 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.

Minimum Requirements:

(Note: Additional requirements may be applicable for individual positions in the employing agency.)

A high school diploma and experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A high school diploma and three years experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience. Some positions require certification by the Department of Public Safety in accordance with 23-6-430 or the 1976 South Carolina Code of Laws.

MUSC Physical Requirements:

(Note: The following descriptions are applicable to this section: Continuous - 6-8 hours per shift; Frequent - 2-6 hours per shift; Infrequent - 0-2 hours per shift)

Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time. (Continuous)
Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs. (Infrequent)
Ability to lift, drag, pull persons to safety, weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to hear and recognize various alarms, verbal summons and other sounds within noisy background areas. (Continuous)
Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected. (Continuous)
Ability to climb stairs to the top floor of any building within the institutions. (Infrequent)
Olfactory sense must be intact in order to smell unusual odors. (Continuous)
Ability to carry heavy objects, i.e. persons, a distance of 15 to 20 feet in emergency situations. (Infrequent)
Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders. (Infrequent)
Ability to run for extended distances. (Infrequent)
Ability to sit/drive a patrol vehicle for extended periods. (Continuous)
Ability to ride a bicycle for extended periods. (Continuous)
Ability to kneel. (Infrequent)
Ability to bend. (Frequent)
Ability to climb ladders. (Infrequent)
Ability to work are heights at maximum height of builidings within institution boundaries. (Frequent)
Abilityl to sit, for extended periods, while operating a patrol vehicle. (Continuous)

Additional New Requirements:
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license.
Computer literacy.
Ability to work overtime as required.
