The MUSC Wellness Center is a facility designed to promote good health. The Center fosters the development of healthy lifestyles through the promotion of wellness attitudes and practices. More than a health club, the MUSC Wellness Center focuses on the development of total well-being. The programs are designed and staffed by a team of health professionals who believe wellness is the balance of social, emotional, spiritual and physical health.
The MUSC Wellness Center was developed to provide future health professionals, faculty, and personnel of MUSC an opportunity to participate in social, recreational and educational activities to promote healthy lifestyles. The Center was built in three phases:
Phase I offers 10,000 square feet of exercise area located in the renovated first floor of the Alumni Memorial House. Members enjoy a variety of exercise equipment and programs. This includes selectorized weight machines by Free Motion, Cybex, and Life Fitness and a complete selection of free weight equipment by Hammer Strength, and Freemotion.
This Phase is also equipped with locker rooms and shower facilities and a Fitness Assessment/Human Performance Laboratory.
Phase II-A included the addition of a 3,000 sq. ft. aerobic exercise room. The aerobic room has a floor designed with a special surface to minimize impact and injury. An auditorium equipped with a projection room, wide screen TV, and a separate PA system is available for lectures, group meetings and special programs. A small nursery provides members with day-care service while exercising.
Phase II-B opened August 2, 1993. The 80,000 sq. ft. facility includes a cardiovascular exercise area, gymnasium, indoor and outdoor jogging tracks, 4 racquetball courts, 2 squash courts, 4 tennis courts and a junior Olympic pool. The cardiovascular exercise area has a variety of exercise equipment including: Stairmaster Stepmills, Precor and Star Trac Ellipticals, Treadmills, Star Trac Cycles, Fluid Rowers, NuSteps, and individual Cardio Theater TV's on 55 pieces of cardio equipment. The junior olympic pool opened in July 1995, and has seven 25 meter lanes for lap swimming, two Badu jets for stationary swimming, a jacuzzi bench, and a large area for aerobics.
In addition to the exercise equipment, members have access to our towel service. Therapeutic Massage is available by appointment. Equipment check-out service offers members the use of: racquetball racquets and balls, protective eyewear, basketballs, volleyballs, walleyballs, and squash racquets and balls. The racquetball, squash, and tennis courts are available for use by reservation only. Facilities may only be reserved for same day activities. Members may call 792-5753 to reserve a court and time.
