The 2016 SC FIT FAMILY CHALLENGE is coming! Get ready to get healthy on May 1st.

What is Fit Family Challenge?

The Fit Family Challenge is a healthy family lifestyle program. We're motivating families to get moving and create healthier lifestyles. To participate, families will register online and track activities for a chance to earn points and win prizes. MUSC is partnering with Coca-Cola, Parent Magazine, CVS, Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission & the South Carolina Hospital Association to provide support for this campaign through our community resources and wellness experts. Follow expert blogs and find information on free classes in our community at  http://www.lowcountryparent.com/health. Three wellness experts from the Medical University of South Carolina will be working with the Spotlight families during the Fit Family Challenge. Together, they’ll create a plan of action to help the two families reach their health and fitness goals. The experts are: Dr. Susan Johnson, Director of Health Promotion; Debbie Petitpain, Wellness Nutrition Coordinator; Janis Newton, Director of MUSC Wellness Center.

Families take on challenge of getting healthier with contest- 

Dr. Susan Johnson, Director of Health Promotion for MUSC
Dr. Susan JohnsonJohnson has spent the past 25 years promoting health, fitness and wellness as a scholar, educator, and entrepreneur in South Carolina. In her current role, she manages programs aimed at improving the health of MUSC students, employees, and patients, as well as the local community. Her legislative work at the local and state level helped create a smoke-free medical district in Charleston, and guided other businesses in South Carolina to create healthy workplaces. Johnson serves as an elected and appointed leader in more than a dozen community organizations and projects. She received an undergraduate degree from UNC Charlotte, a master’s degree from The Citadel, and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. Her work at MUSC has been recognized through multiple prevention awards and publications, both locally and nationally. She lives on the Isle of Palms with her two young daughters, and in her spare time enjoys running, hiking, and kayaking.
 




Debbie Petitpain, RD, Wellness Nutrition Coordinator for MUSC
Debbie PetitpainPetitpain, a registered dietitian, works with people looking to make dramatic diet and lifestyle changes to lose weight, improve their medical problems and get healthier. At home, she and her husband model to their two young daughters how food nourishes the body, gives us energy, helps us grow and connects us to our community. Debbie has been working in this field for more than 10 years. She graduated from the College of Charleston, received her Master’s in Nutrition from Boston University and completed her dietetic training in Honolulu, Hawaii. She believes the healthiest foods are those that require a fork to be eaten.
 







Janis Newton, Director, MUSC Wellness Center
Janis NewtonNewton has been with the MUSC Wellness Center since 1989. She is certified as a medical exercise specialist, a personal trainer, a post-rehab trainer, a group exercise leader, a maternity fitness instructor trainer, and a Tae-Bo instructor, among other certifications. Janis promotes physical activity and healthy nutrition through education and effective behavior change programs.  She has designed specialty programs for kids, adults, patients with MS, cancer, various chronic diseases, and musculo–skeletal issues.   “Piece It Together” for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders,  and “The Recovery Program” for drug and alcohol recovery are two of the newer programs she directs. Janis enjoys creating exercise and nutrition intervention programs and is looking forward to working with the Fit Family Challenge.
