We are appalled and outraged by last weekend’s demonstrations of bigotry, racism and hatred witnessed in Charlottesville, Virginia and on the University of Virginia’s campus. Letter from Leadership
As many of you are aware, as part of President Trump's FY2018 budget proposal released on March 16, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) asked Congress to increase defense spending by $30 billion and provide $3 billion more for border security for the current fiscal year (FY2017). As an offset, the President proposed $17.9 billion in unspecified spending cuts for FY2017. The Labor Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee would be asked to take the biggest of these cuts at $7.2 billion. Among this amount is the proposed $1.232 billion cut to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including a $50 million reduction achieved by eliminating spending on new Institutional Development Award (IDeA) grants and reducing research grants by $1.182 billion. Review council created by MUSC board of trustees recommends that MUSC board accept three recommendations made in report by state inspector general.    
 
On January 30, Donald R. Johnson II, M.D., board chairman for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Board of Trustees, presided over a meeting of the review council created to assess board spending policies in order to define and align with best practices going forward. The review council discussed three recommendations made in a recent report by the State Inspector General (SIG), who was authorized to review MUSC board spending by the Commission on Higher Education.
