The Boeing Center for Children's Wellness (The Lean Team)
Mission: Our mission is to reduce childhood Obesity in the State of S.C. by creating healthier school environments through innovative wellness initiatives.
MUSC's Boeing Center for Children's Wellness, formerly known as the "Lean Team", was created in July 2007 as a partnership between the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Division of Adolescent Medicine, and the Charleston County School District (CCSD). Our goal is to prevent and treat childhood obesity through family-centered clinical programs paired with policy and environmental changes in schools and communities. The Lean Team received initial funding from the Duke Endowment in 2006 to begin to address the childhood obesity epidemic, through participation in a collaborative project between the four Children's Hospitals in South Carolina called the South Carolina Institute for Childhood Obesity and Related Disorders (SCICORD). Subsequent support has been from many sources including the SC Department of Health and Human Services (2007-2008), the Food Lion Corporation (2007-2012), The Department of Defense (2010-2013), and the Boeing Company (2011-2014).
We are a collaborative program with multiple partners that has been successful in changing unhealthy policies, environments and behaviors in our schools, health care systems. physician practices, and our community. Support from the Boeing Company has allowed us to expand our reach to include Berkeley and Dorchester Counties (regionally) and additional SC counties. In addition, we are committed to advocacy at the State level, and are serving in a leadership capacity on various state committees and boards, including the SC Joint Citizens & Legislative Committee for Children and Youth Childhood Obesity Advisory Group, SC Medical Association Childhood Obesity Taskforce, and the Eat Smart Move More SC Board of Directors.
