The Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is actively involved in all aspects of biomedical research, encompassing various disciplines, departments, centers, and institutes both at MUSC as well as other Medical Centers in the southeast and across the nation. The Department is dedicated to the health and well-being of the citizens of both South Carolina and surrounding states as indicated by the number and variety of outreach programs. This includes the Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center (MCRC), which actively promotes the advancement of knowledge with respect to African Americans who have, or who are at risk of developing, systemis lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, and other debilitating rheumatic diseases, the Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina, which focuses on underserved populations, the Center for Health Care Disparities that seeks to equalize access to health care. There is also a broad range of clinical and translational research activity that encompasses all the major organ systems. In addition, investigators at MUSC are involved in national NIH and industry sponsored clinical trials that will lead to the next generation of medicines and therapies. There are also cutting edge basic science research programs in multiple areas including heart, kidney, liver and lung.
These research programs are nationally and internationally recognized for their scientific contributions that are leading to fundamental new insights into human disease. Collectively, these programs are dedicated to discovering the biological causes of human disease and developing new drugs and treatment strategies that will prevent or halt the progression of diseases that occur in our patients.
The Department of Medicine is actively engaged in research training at all levels, from the medical students, residents, fellows and junior faculty. We have recently developed a faculty Mentoring program that will facilitate and lead to the success and development of our researchers. There is a continuing development of a "culture of research" at MUSC and it is our goal to become a top tier research program. The Department of Medicine is excited and fully committed to expand and promote high quality biomedical research.
