Budget Update

Dear MUSC Faculty, Staff, Students and Friends:

Given the earlier reports of state revenue shortfalls, the Medical University of South Carolina was anticipating a budget cut regarding the university side of the house this fall. Today, the State Budget and Control Board trimmed spending by roughly $200 million, or 4 percent. This particular budget cut means all state agencies must cut spending for this budget year by 4 percent. Four percent lost from the university budget totals about $3 million.

Although still recovering from the loss of 27 percent of its state funding last fiscal year, our faculty and staff have worked hard to operate more efficiently and generate other sources of revenue.  Again, every effort will be made this year to limit any adverse consequences on university employees and services. We'll have more information regarding any possible adjustments that may need to be made in the coming weeks. Rest assured that your efforts have put us in a good position to deal with this latest cut, and I remain grateful for all that you do, and continue to do, for the Medical University.

With deepest appreciation,

Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D.
