MUSC Welcomes Dr. Samir Fakhry as New Chief of General Surgery Dr. Samir Fakhry is the new Chief of the Division of General Surgery. General Surgery encompasses a broad range of procedures, including surgical oncology, bariatric surgery, endocrine surgery, gastroenterologic procedures, and critical care/trauma. The Division is also very active in many areas of surgical research. This spring it opened MUSC’s new clean cell facility, which recently performed a procedure in which a diabetic patient’s own pancreatic cells were removed, treated, and restored to the patient. Dr. Fakhry’s first goals are to enhance our Trauma Center in order to receive Level I Verification from the American College of Surgeons, raising our recognition from the state level to national level and placing MUSC in the most select group of trauma centers. He will also organize surgical services into a Surgical Acute and Critical Care service line. This will allow ‘one-stop shopping’ for patients by integrating the care across disciplines and specialties. SACC will include Surgical ICU, the surgical wards, the ER and the Trauma Center. Dr. Fakhry comes to MUSC as Professor of Surgery. He received his MD from the American University of Beirut School of Medicine and completed residency at UNC Chapel Hill, with further fellowship training at UNC. He is Board Certified in General Surgery with additional certification in trauma and surgical .critical care. |
