| Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery International Outreach Project EAR, Inc. Members of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery travel to the outskirts of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, twice a year with a mission group called Project EAR, Inc., which was started in the mid-1990’s by the departmental chairman, Dr. Paul Lambert. The trips have been led by Dr. Ed Dodson, a neurotologist from Ohio State University who is one of Dr. Lambert’s trainees. Our MUSC group will lead its first trip in spring of 2010.
Each trip lasts a little over one week during which the group operates on 60-80 impoverished patients with ear, nose, and throat problems. These trips have included surgeons, nurses, residents, and physician assistants from MUSC. Over the last 15 years, Project EAR has averaged 2-3 trips to the Dominican Republic per year. In addition to performing surgery, mission surgeons work with Dominican otolaryngologists to improve local care for ear, nose, and throat diseases. | Related Video - MUSC Neuroscience in East Africa |
