Welcome to the College of Nursing
Congratulations on your acceptance into the College of Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina! We look forward to you meeting you at orientation held at the MUSC Campus in Charleston, SC on July 20-21, 2016. Orientation is mandatory for all accepted students. Please review this page for important information that will assist you in planning for orientation. It will be updated frequently, especially the closer it gets to orientation, so please check back for updates.
Purpose of Orientation
The purpose of orientation is for new students to become familiar to the program, faculty, peers, campus resources, and the MUSC online learning environment. We want each student to know how to access the appropriate resources necessary to support his/her learning and to begin relationships with faculty, staff, and peers that will grow over the next several years of learning, and hopefully lifelong. We want students to feel oriented to their coursework for the first year and leave with a trajectory for the whole program. The schedule allows time for getting and giving information, but also for meaningful social interaction with others. We hope that orientation will get you excited about starting the upcoming semester and that it will ease your mind about what to expect in the upcoming months and years.
In addition to the on-campus orientation, you will be required to complete an online prep course that will help prepare you for coursework within your program. Topics will include Excel, statistics, writing skills, conducting online searches and an introduction to evidence-based practice. You will have access to it after the on-campus orientation and it will need to be completed by August 17. "Completed" means completing the small quizzes after each lesson to let us know you reviewed the information and understand it. Students who not complete this prep course will not be allowed access to their fall classes on August 23. More details will be discussed at orientation.

The Charleston International Airport is located at 5500 International Blvd in North Charleston. This is about a 20 minute drive to MUSC's campus in downtown Charleston. Students should plan their own transportation between the airport and hotel. There are rental car agencies available at the airport as well as taxi and shuttle service. The average taxi ride will cost about $30 to downtown Charleston. There are plenty of hotels near the airport as well as Tanger Outlet Malls. Please visit the airport's website for more information.
You are responsible for your own lodging arrangements. There are a variety of hotel options to choose from. There are hotels closer to the airport in North Charleston as well as hotels within walking distance to MUSC that will provide a MUSC student rate. There are also many hotels in the downtown historic area. Please click here for a detailed list of hotels.
Students are expected to provide their own transportation to the MUSC campus. Students staying at hotels near the MUSC campus should plan to walk to campus or take the MUSC shuttle bus if the pick-up location is near the hotel. Students traveling to campus via car are allowed to park at the Hagood Parking Lot. This is free, but gets full quickly. In order to get a parking space, you would need to get there by 7:00 a.m. You would also need to take a MUSC shuttle bus which operates throughout the mornings and afternoons. After parking you car, you'll want to look for the bus stop areas in the parking lot and will want to take the bus that says Jonathan Lucas in the front. Buses arrive every five minutes for pick up throughout the morning. The shuttle bus will make several stops before getting to your destination. Please allow 25 minutes to get to your destination. The Jonathan Lucas St. stop is the stop you will want to get off; it will be where the majority of people get off. If the bus driver asks you for ID, please tell them you are a new student here for orientation and show him/her your orientation schedule.

If you'd like to park in one of the visitor's lots that will require you to pay, please click here for list of parking garages. The Jonathan Lucas St. parking lot is the most centralized parking lot on campus.
Breakfast is on your own. If staying in a hotel, breakfast options may be provided. If you get to campus early, the MUSC cafeteria across the street from the Basic Science Building has breakfast foods available to purchase. Lunch will be provided by the Alumni Office on July 20th. MUSC staff, faculty, or local students will be happy to provide you with recommendations for meal options. The MUSC cafeteria provides many options, including Chick-fil-A, Freshii and a salad bar. There are some restaurants nearby: Hominy Grill, Five Loaves, Wickliffe House, Halo and Persimmon. Also, check out the restaurant listings on the Charleston Visitor's Bureau website.
Charleston is a beautiful city that captures the hearts of many. We hope that while visiting Charleston for orientation you will have the opportunity to visit some of our local attractions. Weather and Dress
Charleston climate is hot and humid in July with typical temperatures in the high 80's and 90's. Dress is business casual and comfortable. Please do not wear jeans, shorts or flip flops on July 20 since we have a guest speaker and reception that day. The air conditioning in the buildings can be chilly, so a light sweater or jacket is recommended.

IT staff will be available at orientation, so if you need help getting your laptop and/or phone ready for your classes, you should plan to bring it on the day you have the IT Help session (refer to your orientation schedule). Please note that we will be in rooms a majority of the time that do not have access to charge laptops; however, many students still find it helpful to take notes and refer to items on their laptop.
Fall courses begin Tuesday, August 23, 2016. The Office of Student Services will register you for your courses each semester based upon your scheduled plan of study. Students will need to personally check the courses they are registered for in WebAdvisor to ensure it matches the courses indicated on their plan of study.
The booklist for Fall 2016 will be posted in July. Students usually order their books through online publishers like Amazon or they can be purchased through the MUSC bookstore online or on campus while at orientation. There will be plenty of time to order them before the start of classes.

Grants & Scholarships
The College of Nursing has submitted an application for a HRSA grant for the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship (AENT) program. The award would be to support students enrolled in the Post-BSN DNP or MSN primary care nurse practitioner program at the Medical University of South Carolina. It is anticipated that the College of Nursing will be notified toward of the end of September of decisions. If we are awarded the grant, we will provide information and an applications to students via email.

In order to be eligible for any scholarship or grant, a completed FAFSA form must be in file in the Office of Financial Aid.
