BSN to PhD in Nursing

Focus of the program

The MUSC BSN to PhD in Nursing program is designed to fast track students from the baccalaureate to the doctoral degree.  The program prepares graduates who know they want careers that require research and scholarship abilities.  Career goals include faculty, researchers, clinicians, and nurse-scientists who possess a strong background in the discipline of nursing.  The BSN to PhD curriculum builds upon the knowledge and skills obtained in a baccalaureate in nursing program by requiring selected Master's level courses that will prepare students for advanced professional practice roles. These master's level courses will provide the platform from which students can engage in a program of intellectual inquiry at the doctoral level.

Students receive a PhD in Nursing degree upon completion of the curriculum, not the MSN. However, if a student in the BSN to PhD program desires specialty certification in a specific MSN graduate track, (e.g. family nurse practitioner) all required course-work and clinical hours of practice must be completed for the specific MSN track. Students who desire specialty certification will receive the MSN degree upon completion of the master's courses. Students then progress directly into doctoral course work and receive a PhD in Nursing degree.

The BSN to PhD curriculum for students who are not seeking specialty certification is currently a minimum of 78 MSN and PhD level semester hours. The curriculum can be completed on a full-time basis in five years. Part-time study is available and developed on an individual basis with a faculty advisor.

The doctoral portion of the curriculum is designed to provide students with a core foundation in nursing theory development, research, and knowledge translation. The mentored research experience serves to strengthen skills in the conduct of disciplined inquiry, while the mentored teaching experience promotes skills in curriculum planning and teaching competencies. Program options build on the core foundation and allow students to develop an individualized program of study in conjunction with a faculty advisor. The goal of the curriculum is to prepare beginning researchers in a defined area of nursing science.
