Dr. Barbara Edlund is a tenured Professor in the College of Nursing and a member of the faculty of the Graduate College at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland, a Master of Science in Medical Surgical Nursing/Oncology and a Post Masters certificate in Adult Primary Care from the University of Rochester. She received a Ph.D. in Public Health from the University of South Carolina and also a Post Masters Certificate as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner from the Medical University of South Carolina. She is an ANCC Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner and a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association for which she serves as the Chair of the Education Committee.
A faculty member of the Medical University of South Carolina since 1980, Dr. Edlund currently teaches in the graduate and doctoral nursing programs. She has been funded nationally (HRSA) for the education of advanced practice nurses in Gerontological/Complementary Care, Adult Primary Care and Palliative Care and distance continuing education for hospital nurses in rural areas of the State on the nursing care of the hospitalized older adult. Dr. Edlund is currently a co-investigator on an interprofessional educational grant (AVD Foundation) to infuse compassion, caring and humanism in the education of health professionals and a co-investigator on an R01 (NIH, NINR) with medical and nursing faculty at the University of Washington and Medical University of South Carolina to improve clinician communication with seriously ill patients and families.
A productive writer, she has published numerous articles, book chapters, and co-authored a text on Nursing Assessment and Diagnosis. She serves on the editorial review boards of The On-Line Journal of Issues in Nursing, Advance for Nurses and the Journal of Gerontological Nursing, where she is the Section Editor for the Geropharmocology feature. She has been honored for excellence in practice receiving the Palmetto Gold Award and the South Carolina League for Nursing Award. She has received numerous student teaching awards, most recently receiving the 2009 Outstanding MSN Faculty Member Award. Additionally, Dr. Edlund received the 2009 Medical University of South Carolina Foundation Distinguished Faculty Service. Her clinical practice and research interests include primary care, with a focus on the older adult, and palliative, end-of- life care.
Dr. Edlund has been active in the local Charleston community serving on a number of organizations’ boards that focus on issues of concern to older South Carolinians. For her community work, Dr. Edlund was recognized with a Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Award, given by the Charleston YWCA.
