
The CCHP Community Engaged Scholars Program
SCTR/CCHP is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2012 Community Engaged Scholars Program. The deadline for applications is December 5, 2011 at 5:00 PM.
Overview The Community Engaged Scholars (CES) Program provides training and pilot funds for community and academic partners who have interests in community-based participatory research (CBPR). The goal of this program is to increase the capacity of community-academic partnerships to conduct research with mutual ownership of the processes and products.
After successfully completing the CES Program, participants will meet the following competencies: - Understand the concepts and components of CBPR
- Apply CBPR principles in the conduct of research
- Incorporate CBPR principles and approaches in grant proposals
- Demonstrate CBPR efforts in a career portfolio
- Communicate with audiences in both academic and community settings about CBPR principles and components
- Implement a pilot CBPR initiative
Eligibility Applicant teams must consist of a community partner and an academic partner. A community partner is defined as an individual(s) who maintains a primary affiliation, whether employed or volunteer, with a community organization. For the purposes of this program, community organization is defined as an organization that: - Has a documented interest in improving the health of the relevant community (e.g. a mission statement) and;
- Has a history of serving the health needs and interests of the relevant community. These organizations may include, but are not limited to public schools, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and/or advocacy groups. An academic partner is defined as an individual(s) with a faculty appointment in a research area at MUSC.

Our past CES teams and participants have:
- Presented at state and national conferences with both academic and community partners as presenters
- Been awarded funding to continue their research with community partners as co-investigators
- Written articles about their partnership teams
- Received a Liberty Fellowship
