EPA/HRSA Year-Long Webinar Series on Improving Children's Health - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have organized, in collaboration with other Federal partners, a one-year-long webinar series titled Improving Children’s Health through Federal Collaboration. Children, by their very nature, deserve our focused attention and care especially because:

  • Their bodily systems are still developing,
  • They eat more, drink more, and breathe more in proportion to their body size
  • Their behavior patterns increase their exposure to environmental hazards.

Protecting the health of children where they live, learn and play is fundamental to making the world a better place for future generations. The purpose of this webinar series is to encourage coordination, collaboration and information sharing across government agencies and organizations, health care providers, educators, and the general public in addressing children’s health issues.

EPA Community Resource Guide – The Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Justice Interagency Working Group has released a resource guide for communities addressing environmental issues.  The programs included in the guide are focused on resources that would assist communities with technical or financial assistance. 2011 Ornament of Hope For Sale at Trident Literacy Association - Trident Literacy Association announces the arrival of the 2011 “Ornament of Hope.”  Each year the organization sells the ornament to raise funds for their adult literacy programs in the tri-county. Whether for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, holidays, or other special occasions, the ‘Ornament of Hope’ makes a beautiful gift that lasts a lifetime.

Since 1991, at the request of then-Governor Carroll Campbell, local artist, Anne Worsham Richardson, has donated the use of one of her paintings to benefit literacy efforts throughout the state.  The exclusive interpretation from watercolor to metal is the work of Elizabeth Anne Neiman at The Charleston Mint.

This year’s ornament features the “Saw Whet.”  Ms. Richardson explained how it was chosen.

“A few years ago, I had an exhibition of ‘American Birds’ in the Pittsfield Art Museum in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. I did a lecture to open the exhibit and afterwards, I was invited to the Anderson Owl Sanctuary in nearby Lenox. I entered the Saw-Whet Owl enclosure so that I could study the small owl for my plan to paint one. A pine tree with low branches was inside the enclosure where several Saw-Whet owls were perched. I reached my hand up to the branches and a little owl walked onto my hand. It was about six inches long and very tame. I did a study which was selected by National Wildlife Federation for a Christmas card.  We are using the Saw-Whet Owl on the Ornament of Hope for 2011 to benefit literacy in South Carolina.”

In addition to being a lovely image of the Saw-Whet Owl, the ornament is a symbol of hope for improving adult literacy so people can improve their skills and qualify for jobs.

The mission of Trident Literacy Association is to increase literacy in the tri-county, where one in seven adults are functionally illiterate and 60,000 do not have a high school credential. The curriculum is self-paced and individualized to help people in the subjects they need most, whether reading, writing, mathematics, English as a Second Language or basic computer use.  With the assistance of nearly 300 volunteers, the organization serves 2,000 students annually.

Orders for ornaments are now being accepted. Single ornaments may be reserved for $15, and a matted-and-framed version is also available (with a copy of the Anne Worsham Richardson print that inspired it) for $35 plus $5 postage and handling.  Orders should be sent to Trident Literacy Association, 5416-B Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406, or you may order on line at www.tridentlit.org.  Delivery time is about one week.  Call 747-2223 for more information.
