Qualitative Research Intensive

Join us for a week-long series of classes for researchers and others who wish to learn how to develop and implement a qualitative research project.

This Qualitative Research Intensive will:

  • Discuss when a qualitative approach is appropriate
  • Discover how to frame your research purpose and questions
  • Determine which qualitative approach to use
  • Devise data collection options, including focus group strategies and interview question development, and data analysis

Scholars, analysts, and researchers from all disciplines and industries are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their qualitative work in progress with them.

Julie Barroso, PhD, ANP, RN, FAAN
Professor and Department Chair

Dr. Barroso has conducted qualitative research for more than 20 years. During her career, she has guided many doctoral students and faculty through the qualitative process, including obtaining funding for qualitative proposals. She co-taught with Margarete Sandelowski, PhD, RN, FAAN, in several qualitative research summer programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Together, they developed techniques for qualitative metasynthesis and published the Handbook for Synthesizing Qualitative Research. 


Daily Schedule:

Monday: 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Tuesday: 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. until noon*
Thursday: 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m. until noon*

* Please note that while the formal sessions will end at noon on Wednesday and Friday, Dr. Barroso would like to use those afternoons to meet individually with each participant to help you advance your work. There will be a sign-up for times on the first day of the intensive.

Breakfast will be provided throughout the week. Lunch will be provided on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. On the half-day sessions lunch will be on your own. The MUSC cafeteria provides many options, including Chick-fil-A, Freshii and a salad bar. Restaurants within walking distance include: Hominy GrillFive LoavesWickliffe HouseHalo, Fuel, Gnome Café, Bon Banh Mi, and Persimmon.   • Your seat is not officially held until payment is received in full. If full payment is not received by June 1, 2018, your registration will be canceled and you will not be able to attend the course.

Participants are responsible for their own lodging arrangements with a variety of options to choose from. There are hotels near the airport in North Charleston, as well as hotels within walking distance to the MUSC campus. There are also numerous hotels in the historic district downtown. Many hotels will offer a MUSC rate so be sure to ask when making a reservation. Keep in mind summer is prime tourist season in Charleston, so book as soon as you can to get the best rates.

The Charleston International Airport is located at 5500 International Blvd in North Charleston. This is about a 20 minute drive to MUSC's campus in downtown Charleston. Participants are responsible for their own transportation between the airport and their hotel. There are rental car agencies available at the airport, as well as taxi and shuttle services. The average taxi ride will cost around $30 to downtown Charleston. There are plenty of hotels near the airport as well as Tanger Outlet Malls. QRI participants are expected to provide their own transportation to the MUSC campus. Daily parking is included in your registration.
